Weekly Mix # 73

Another week another mix! This one has some sort of theme I think, can we find it through the music? Obviously by the end it all comes around.

1. California Gurls by Katy Perry (feat Snoop Dogg)
One of 2010's huge hit songs and put the chick who bragged about missing girls into mega stardom, getting her a crazy husband.

 
2. Elephant Flares by Redd Kross
Kind of a cult band, kind of the band that only music geeks know and the fact that they're covering Roky Erikson makes it even more precious.

3. My Eyes Have Seen You by The Doors
Television skies . . . Awesome!

 
4. Telephone by The Black Angeles
If the 60's were the 10's

 
5. Draw Japan by The Horrors
More creepy music from I guess one of my favorite albums of that year

 
6. Corvette bummer by Beck
Bonus track from the Loser CD single; it's groovy and dumb but great!

7. The Inevitable Relapse by Filter
Not bad for a comeback that didn't return. The end of the song however flows beautifully into the next one.

 
8. Steppin' Up by M.I. A.
Transitions are so important in a mix and this song picks up so well from the last it's like magic.

 
9. Chase The Tear by Portishead
A speedy Portishead tune that sounds like something off of the Flash Gordon Soundtrack and in the end suddenly become the next song on the mix like it was meant to be!

10.Baby Jane by Rod Stewart

Is this Rod at his best or creepiest? I don't know but the song has always left me feeling raw.

11.Rocks Off by The Rolling Stones
Great Stones! This is one of the reasons people loved Exile On Main Street!

 
12.Personality Crisis by New York Dolls
They were supposed to be the American Stones but they failed and Aerosmith took over.

 
13.Pink Houses by John Cougar Mellencamp
Wave the flag and get down to basics. This is one of those big 80's America songs

This is like a lost Car's track and it's great! Sorry there's no real Car's song to follow just . . .

If you don't like this song you're pretentious; it's just that simple.

 
21.California Girls by The Beach Boys
Every Blue blooded American boy loves this song even if it means all the local hotties wouold be whisked away to Los Angeles . . . doesn't that happen anyway?

Dead Stars: Amy Winehouse

We knew it was going to happen, it was clearly the path that she was on. She bared her soul and shared her pain with the world through music and it was obvious she wasn’t just writing songs for entertainment. She walked it like she talked it. Amy Winehouse joined the 27 club (Jim Morrison, Janis, Joplin, Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix) Saturday July 23rd most likely due to heart failure involving complications with her drug and alcohol addiction.

Her Back to Black Album was one of the last decade best and maybe even the last great album to this point. The Songs Rehab, Back to Black and I’m no Good were the stand outs on an autobiographic masterpiece she recorded in 2006 with much help from producer Mark Ronson. Anybody who’s been through heartbreak and alcohol abuse could connect to the album without difficulty.

I have made light of her life in the past by sting that she should already be (along with Axl Rose and Fiona Apple) but like I said, it was clear this was the path that Winehouse was committed to.
It is a shame her remarkable talent couldn’t be enjoyed longer but as they say the flame that burns twice as bright burns for half as long. Hers was not the voice of a generation but that of a tortured soul. We can only hope that in death she can find peace.

Weekly Mix #72

What we have here is 2010 and ll it's sloppiness. We have four artists trying to make come backs and a couple we'll never hear from again. I have tow sort of fake bands on her, weird.

I had just seen the Cult do their Love album live plus  all their hits; it was awesome. It made me go back and feverishly listen to all their songs again and this one from Electric kept getting replayed

3.Rats In The Cellar by Aerosmith
When you hear guys in their 50s talk about Aerosmith being a very different band in the 70s this is what they're referring to.
4. Fast As I Can by Stone Temple Pilots
This was part of STP's come back album and heavily used for Baseball Tonight's highlight reel on ESPN.
5. Stay With Me by Faces
Rod Stewart and Jeff Beck have never sounded this good again. Maybe I didn't like this 40 year old song until recently but now I love it!
6. The Ghost Who Walks by Karen Elison
The former Mrs. Jack White sings for us
7. Funnel of Love by Wanda Jackson (feat. The Cramps)
She's kind of a legend and she did a song with another kind of legend The Cramps

 
8. Mr. Orange by Dengue Fever
I have no clue what she's singing about

 
9. Vietnow by Rage Against The Machine
Funky metal and a head rush; it works!
10.Here We Are Juggernaut by Coheed and Cambria
It's big and rocking but not great
11.Sweet Disposition by The Temper Trap 
One his wonders can be very awesome things
12.It Never Rains In Southern California by Albert Hammond & M. Havelwood
I think Hammond is the father of one of the Strokes. This is a good song.
13.On Meloncholy Hill by Gorillaz
Plastic Beach was a let down of an album but this little number was okay
14.Murmaider by Dethklok
Not a really band but they still have some wicked numbers
15.Let Me Hear You Scream by Ozzy Osbourne
Why is still good that Ozzy puts out music? Because it's melodious hard rock that makes you pump that fist, throw u the devil horns and bang your head!

16.Fresh by Devo
Yes, Devo had a new song and it was one of my favorites of 2010. The managed to sound modern and keep that Devo sound . . . okay maybe they don't sound modern but they do sound good
17.Dare to Be Stupid by "Weird Al" Yankovic
Parody is the sincerest form of flattery. Al does Devo very well and very funny.
18.She Blinded Me with Science by Thomas Dolby
SCIENCE! This concludes the New Wave portion of the mix
19.Oildale (Leave Me Alone) by Korn
It was a good song but it just wasn't the comeback record of the year. Too long had passed since Freak On A Leash.
20.Heroin by Roky Erikson
Covering the Velvet Underground is a ballsy thing. Cult legend Roky Erikson  pulls this one off by speeding it up adding anguish and getting rid of the pretension.

21.Rocket Queen by Guns N' Roses
I've been waiting to use this song for years but there had never been the right place for it. Yes, that's real sex in the breakdown. If there's one G N' R song you can boogie down to it's this one.

Weekly Mix #71

We are making mixes in 2010 and it feels weak but that's probably my fault as I insist on exploring new music and want to hear what's current. I could make a better mix with the classic but then it would need to be themed or something. There is a decidedly retro theme to this mix though, I mean 90's bands like Alice In Chains and Stone Temple Pilots with their most recent music, a band doing and 80's cover, a song that could be about the 60s, songs from various decades past, a couple bands that want to sound old. Get lost and enjoy.

Underrated band. One album and they broke up, too bad or too good, I don't know

If you recall the early 90s you recall the movie Singles; this was one of the main songs from the film.

10.Slow Poison by The Bravery
A friend told me to check this song out and so I did; it's not bad.
11.Stylo by Gorillaz

Mos Def and Bobby Womack assist on this excellent number; this could be the last good thing Gorillaz ever do.

12.Die by The Drop by The Dead Weather
Jack White will never die. This is a groovy tune by his third well known band.
13.Your Decision by Alice In Chains
Alice In Chains do a couple things really well and making somber acoustic numbers is one of them. IS this a ballad to late singer Layne Staley, maybe.
14.Sweet Young Thing Ain't Sweet No More by Mudhoney
This was grunge before it had a name and before it got sold to the millions
15.Bitter Tears by INXS
Such a good band. Hutchence was a great front man, i don't care what you say.

The man, the myth, Lemmy Kilmeister lends his gravely vocals to this effort. What this proves is that Slash needs a front man and song writer.

21.Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen
If you're from New Jersey you have no choice but to love this song; it was made for you. This song is epic and I wish I got a chance to hear it live.

Weekly Mix #70

So . . . This is a nice little mix that goes to various places and genres and decades which is good, right?


1. Kick by INXS
As time goes by INXS just seems to get better and that's really weird. I mean I thought they were a very good band when I was 15 but by the time I was 25 I thought they were lame.
2. Mow by Miss Crazy
Some bands are founded on being Mötley Crüe and in this case it's alright, mama!
3. 99 Problems by Jay-Z
Just let the man rap; it that good even though this is really It Was a Good Day with anger.
4. Round and Round by Ratt
More people love this song than I can agree with. people say it's more than an 80s metal tune but I disagree.
5. Broken Glass by Buckcherry
Rocking out like this doesn't really happen too much in these days.
6. Resistance by Muse
Huge album for this band; it's really all bloated from this point forward . . . that and child support
7. Hollywood by Codeine Velvet Club
Jon Lawler from Fratelis is in this 60s tribute band. Very inspired show music!
8. One Thousand Tears of a Tarantula by Dengue Fever
I thought Dengue Fever was a play on Saturday Night Fever but it's a real and bad thing. These guys are also a heavily 60s inspired group but more psychedelic.
9. Sunshine Superman by Donavan
This is the real deal for 1960s music. If I'm correct Donavan isn't allowed in the US still.
10.My Generation by The Who
More real rock from the 60s! I hated this band and song for years but I came around.
11.(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party) by Hotrats
Covers should all be as innovative as this
12.Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac
Mysterious and nebulous
13.Modern Man by The Watson Twins
One of my three favorite songs from 2010

This si one of those songs that I can listen to about a million time in a row; it connects on a deep level. I'm shocked I don't hear it in lonesome bars more

Johnette Napolitano from Concrete Blonde lends her pipes to this duet with Paul Westerburg; it crude but cool.
18.Latest Heartbreak by 22-20s
A band I know nothing about.

20.Johnny Kick A Hole In The Sky by Red Hot Chili Peppers
Their tribute to their late, first guitarist Hilel Slovak. For some reason this song gets harder and harder for me to listen too as years go by. Something about it is a tough pill.
