Weekly Mix #80

I don't know how I feel about this mix. There's a lot of stuff on here that may be forgotten in the near future. I'm partial to great music butu when nobody cares about it . . .
Anyway go listen to these songs and enjoy the exploration of new music!

Mix # 80 from Solidpants on 8tracks.

1. Ezekiel 25-17 film dialogue from Pulp Fiction
Sam Jackson at his best. When I used to make mixes on cassette it was a lot easier to copy film dialogue but I'm not invested enough anymore to do that sort of thing digitally.
2. Highway To Hell by AC/DC

It's definitely one of AC/DC's best songs and the premise is classic rock stuff. They Say when Bon Scott died he was getting his in order but when you choke on your own vomit in your car in front of your house it seems a bit unlikely.

3. Crackerman by Stone Temple Pilots

Here's a song I never really listened to until 2010; I just ignored it. From STP's debut, Core it kicks a little ass.

4. Standing Still by Eat Sugar

This is a great little rock/pop song by a band that I don't think I'll ever hear of again, I loves those drums!

5. Second Chance by Peter, Bjorn and John

I'm so glad this band came out with more than one good new song.

6. Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before by The Smiths
 One of the greatest 80s bands to never make it big in the states. Too good I guess.
7. Blood by The Dears

One of the best modern Canadian bands to never get anywhere in the states

8. Post Break-Up Sex by The Vaccines
Great band name and almost a great song but to sort of tries too hard to sound like something besides a good pop song.
9. I Got You (I Feel Good) by James Brown

The hardest working man in show business, the godfather of soul! Refusing this song is like refusing incredible awesome stuff.

RIP Mr. Brown

10.Come On Get It by Lenny Kravitz

Promises and teases, that's what Lenny's career in music has turned into. This isn't so bad as it almost delivers awesome.

11.Born To Lose by Motörhead

Born to lose, live to win. That's Lemmy's tattoo.

12.Sheena Is a Punk Rocker by Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Evergetic and more poppy than the original Ramones version but still good.

13.Man of Misery by Beady Eye

Liam Gallagher's new band? Goodbye Oasis until 2020 when they reunite.

14.Garbage Truck by Sex Bob-Omb

This one sounds like the previous song, don't it? I don't know which I like better

15.Intro (Dream Sequence) by Alice In Chains

It's loud, short and scary, not really a song.

16.Family Man by Hall and Oates

Hookers were very prevalent on their H2O album ie. Man Eater

17.Before the Rain bu Duran Duran

Don't Hold back the Rain, that was an old song and this is a new song, just as good too.

18.My Kinda Lover by Billy Squier

Before he decided to do weird Flashdance moves in his videos, Mr. Squier had some really good rock/pop songs like this one.

19.Buick MacKane (Big Dumb Sex) by Guns N' Roses

Some people hate The Spaghetti Incident but not me. This is a mix of a Soundgarden song and a Nazareth song and it works.

20.Lost In Hollywood by System of a Down
"All maggots smoking fags on Santa Monica Boulevard" this is a chilly distopian view of Hollywood show business. Angry, angry song.
21.You Showed Me by The Watson Twins

Haunting vocals and stark, lovely.

22.Blood by My Chemical Romance

I have a friend who heard this song and thought this was what the band sounded like, he was not pleased when he heard more of their music. This is indeed a funny little show tune but it's a joke and more of a fun sing along for their concerts than anything else.

23.Get Some by Lykke Li
I heard this song played on the radio once, once. That's too bad, it's a good song.
24.Woo Hoo by The 5.6.7.8's

Japanese retro music made famous in Kill Bill and Vonage adds

25.Loser by Beck
It took this long to get on a mix and I don't know why.

Weekly Mix # 73

Another week another mix! This one has some sort of theme I think, can we find it through the music? Obviously by the end it all comes around.

1. California Gurls by Katy Perry (feat Snoop Dogg)
One of 2010's huge hit songs and put the chick who bragged about missing girls into mega stardom, getting her a crazy husband.

 
2. Elephant Flares by Redd Kross
Kind of a cult band, kind of the band that only music geeks know and the fact that they're covering Roky Erikson makes it even more precious.

3. My Eyes Have Seen You by The Doors
Television skies . . . Awesome!

 
4. Telephone by The Black Angeles
If the 60's were the 10's

 
5. Draw Japan by The Horrors
More creepy music from I guess one of my favorite albums of that year

 
6. Corvette bummer by Beck
Bonus track from the Loser CD single; it's groovy and dumb but great!

7. The Inevitable Relapse by Filter
Not bad for a comeback that didn't return. The end of the song however flows beautifully into the next one.

 
8. Steppin' Up by M.I. A.
Transitions are so important in a mix and this song picks up so well from the last it's like magic.

 
9. Chase The Tear by Portishead
A speedy Portishead tune that sounds like something off of the Flash Gordon Soundtrack and in the end suddenly become the next song on the mix like it was meant to be!

10.Baby Jane by Rod Stewart

Is this Rod at his best or creepiest? I don't know but the song has always left me feeling raw.

11.Rocks Off by The Rolling Stones
Great Stones! This is one of the reasons people loved Exile On Main Street!

 
12.Personality Crisis by New York Dolls
They were supposed to be the American Stones but they failed and Aerosmith took over.

 
13.Pink Houses by John Cougar Mellencamp
Wave the flag and get down to basics. This is one of those big 80's America songs

 Here is a mix that was fairly up to day when it was made in 2005. It includes one of my favorite songs from 2004 including Portions for Foxes; a dark little ditty. We explore another track from The White Stripes' Get Behind Me Satan  album which almost seems like classic rock at this point.

America had The Stroke and England had The Libertines
9. Crispin Glover by Scarling
L.A.'s own little goth pop band. I saw them live in 2005 and they played really well.
10.NYC by Interpol
New York City's own Joy Division  that has a bassist that looks like Crispin glover . . . do you get the progression?
11.Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division
If it's not love it's impending fame
12.Misty Mountain Hop by Led Zeppelin
Classic rock that is supposedly about a walk in the park. I love the organ in the beginning, it sounds like jet travel.
13.Freedom Fighters by The Music
 A random song that I assume was bigger in the UK than here.
14.The Rooster by Outkast
This is a hot jam from the Speaker Box and The Love Below
15.No One Knows by Queens of the Stone Age
The ever changing line up of QotSA makes me wonder a lot about the band.
16.I Hope, I Think, I know by Oasis
 This was an overlooked gem on Oasis's highly anticipated album, Be Here Now.  The album was overripe and self indulgent but this song is short and simple. They even reference Wonderwall.
17.Sometimes Always by The Jesus & Mary Chain
Alternative rock started to put out duets in 1994 a sure sign of a genre's demise. Hope Sandoval from MAzzy Star lends her sweet lazy vocals to this tune
18.Rodeohead by Hard 'N Firm
Chris Hardwick of Singled Out and Web Soup was in this odd little band and made a very good Radiohead medley, country blue grass style.
19. Crawl Straight Home by HorrorPops
Rockabilly done modern
20.Goodbye Stranger by Supertramp
I used to get Heart and Supertramp mixed up when I was a little kid; i think I thought the singer was a woman. A song about love on the road, real problems that none of us have to deal with.

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 37

There's not a lot of modern music on this mix even for the year it was made in 2005 but there is a lot of British music.

Before the word "Epic" became synonymous with annoying exaggeration this song was nnown for wacked out it's video, this was one of the first rap/rock bands to make a splash in the mainstream.
2. Nuthin' But A "G" Thang by Dr. Dre feat. Snoop Dogg
Classic rap from a man who is becoming the Axl Rose of the hip hop world; it's been 17 years since this album came out.
3. Higher Ground by Red Hot Chili Peppers
This was the bands MTV breakthrough from 1989. Stevie Wonder's original never dreamed of big drums like these.
4. My Friend Goo by Sonic Youth
What is this song about? Some say it's a bout a the dumb poser girls who go to rock shows and some say it's about a bitter slut.
5. Boogie Shoes by K.C. & The Sunshine Band
Having just bought the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack used and cheap I began to revisit an album I listened to all the time when I was 5 years old; it still sounds good.
6. You Can Get It If you Really Want by Jimmy Cliff
Music from the 1972 film, The Harder They Come. I've never seen it.
7. Jive Talkin' by Bee Gees
This is one of the rare disco era Bee Gees that's more groovy than over the top disco; it;s also from Saturday Night Fever
8. No Wow by The Kills
Every song the Kills do sounds just like this. Alison Mosshart went on to be in The Dead Weather with Jack White.
9. Blue Orchid by The White Stripes
And speak of the devil, Jack White appears with his first band. Listening to the vocals I often wonder if this song is a joke. For the record this mix was made years before the Dead Weather existed which goes to prove that there is a cosmic unconsciousness.
10.Molly's Lips by Nirvana
Catchy, catchy, catchy grunge pop, change the music and it could be a song from the 60s
11.Sign Your Name by Terence Trent D'Arby
The ballad that followed the hit Wishing Well, Mr. D'Arby proves he has a heart.
12.Like Glue by Sean Paul
He will not play number two and that's all I can understand in this dance hall song.
13.We 'A' Rockers by Inner Circle
Continuing our Jamaican music we have the theme to Rockers  a movie I Know I saw in the theater in 1978 because people tell me I have. Rockers is the other reggae movie.

This band was third part of the Brit pop invasion of the mid 90s following Blur and Oasis
15.Main Offender by The Hives
More rock from the land of Thor and Odin. I wonder if these guys got beat up by the death metal guys?
16.Weirdo by The Charletons
Manchester, so much to answer for. This is from the sophomore album by the band that were second only to the Stone Roses . . . and maybe the Happy Mondays in that rock sub genre. The Charlatans  however made more records than all of them with a much longer career.
17.Lost In The Plot by The Dears
This song wants to be a Smith's song so bad. Canadian rock sometimes comes through but . . .
18.I Started Something I Couldn't Finish by The Smiths
there's nothing quite like the real thing. Off the bands final album, Morrissey croons the line, "Typical Me, Typical Me, Typical Me", it's funny.
19.There She Goes by The La's
This song was bigger than the band and that's why they never put out another album. I can think of at least two covers of this song but the original is still the best. I saw The La's play a free show at the Hatch Shell in Boston in 1991.
20.Porcupine by Mary's Danish
Grunge era rock that wasn't grunge but still encapsulated the early 90s angst and "irony".
21.Missing by Beck
Kind of a trippy Latin number but not quite; it's a weird one
22.Vasoline by Stone Temple Pilots
This song is better in retrospect than it was at the time, like most of STP. I mean that in a good way. When Velvet Revolver performed this song it rocked a bit harder than this which is awesome!

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 11

This weeks mix has got some sweeping songs, some anthem caliber songs if you will. This mix has the capacity to be the greatest mix ever buut it's not; it's sort of like the Yankees of mix tapes every song is an all star (a side from Post Card Blues, Free and Veda Very Shining). I would say some of these songs shouldn't be together on a mix because they are so powerful they could destroy one another. Lets examine and enjoy shall we?

Once Letters To Cleo was one of my favorite bands and a group I thought to be vastly underrated; I never listen to them anymore.

Slash and Duff make this song rock the balls!

Even Hard Criminals loved this weepy song. I liked the Spanish guitar

Mr. Isaak has made his sadness lethal; this song made me want to shoot myself in sympathy.

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 6

Obviously not all mixes are created equal and this is one of the lesser ones. I would like to harvest about 60% of the songs on here and create a new mix. I guess I made this one in 1999. I hope you enjoy making attempts to listen to it.

1. Should I Stay or Should I Go by The Clash 
Amongst other things they really knew how to rock and be tough sounding even

 2. Memphis Hip Shake by The Cult
The Cult tried to be  an American band in 1987 and be more ballsy with their rock. Rick Rubin helped them jam.
3. Velvet Roof By Buffalo Tom
Not heard outside of New England, Buffalo Tom were groovy, loud band from Boston. This is my favorite rocker of theirs.

4. #1 Crush by Garbage
Is this even a song? It's as much of a song as Madonna's Justify My Love and has that same sexiness to it. You can find it on The Romeo and Juliet soundtrack.
5. Five Fathoms by Everything But The Girl
They  got into sounding like a club band after Missing was remixed by a DJ and made them a lot of money.
6. Waiting For Tonight by Jennifer Lopez
No Comment

7. Mixed Bizness by Beck
Midnight Vultures was Beck's attempt to make a dance and R&B album. Some of it worked well while other songs were just ludicrous.
8. Sex-O-Matic Venus Freak by Macy Gray
No shame sometimes makes a good song. She tells us how her man makes her behave like a porn star and it's a good thing.
9. Always on the Run by Lenny Kravitz
So god damned cool was Lenny back in the day. All the white kids wanted to be like him. Slash wrote the guitar  for this song and then played with Lenny. 

10.Got Let It Out by Oasis
Not the boys best effort but it's not in retrospect.
11.Made Of Stone by The Stone Roses
The band that was Oasis before Oasis. Only if they had toured in the States . . .
12.Verse Chorus Verse by Nirvana
The Secret track from the, No Alternative album. It's in my top ten Nirvana songs.
13.Porcelain by Moby
Moby was huge for a bout a year and this was one of the reasons why.
14.Kissing A Fool by George Michael
Smokey bars and whiskey were made for this song. This song was back when the former lead singer of Wham! was the brightest star on Mtv and his album, Faith was a genre crossing phenom.

15.Suffragette City by David Bowie
The Spiders From Mars, Ziggy Stardust, they were amazing
16.Guerilla Radio by Rage Against the Machine
I love when a band stays angry!
17.Ain't No Right by Jane's Addiction
Another example how the coolest band in the world in their prime.
18.Fire by The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Classic rock exemplified in one great song by the greatest rock guitarist ever.

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 4

This weeks mix has a some moments that are directly stolen form a mix tape I made in the late 80s, see if you can figure out which part. I really like those 3 songs together.

1. Stacked Actors by Foo Fighters
A good hate song is great, especially when it's about Courtney Love
2. Ocean Size by Jane's Addiction
This was really my first introduction to Jane's Addiction and I loved them, I thought they were amazing and they scared me. Weird, sexy and kick ass!

3. Paranoid Android by Radiohead
Some people say this was the last good album Radiohead ever did and some people say this was the end to their beginning. I don't know, they have got boring.
4. Where is My Mind by Pixies
Some bands were bigger than they were, The Pixies is one of them. They influenced everybody but never got much bigger than the Alternative music scene at the time would let them. This song is great, trippy and and real cool.
5. Sweet Child O' Mine by Guns N' Roses
Yes, this is one of the greatest rock songs of all time and if you can't accept that than you are just fool. It's tough sounding but sweet, the lyrics are nice but Axl's voice was so perfect in the late 80s there was nothing anybody could do about it.
6. The One I love by R.E.M.
I kinda' liked R.E.M. up until this point but when I heard this song I went nuts for them
7. Desire by U2
They took a riff from Bo Diddly and got very American
8. Then by The Charletons UK
I wasn't a big fan of these Manchester guys but suddenly they got into my veins and I really started to dig the whole scene. rock organ with a dance beat and undeniably English vocals. Yes they sound a lot like The Stone Roses but I'm okay with that.

10.Fast As You Can by Fiona Apple
Fiona isn't as creepy on this song as she was on Criminal but she's just as insane. This is a little bit of a hyper song for her and I like it.
11.Cecelia by Simon and Garfunkle
Feel good song, sort of.
12.Posthuman by Marilyn Manson
Wicked sounding rock for the future which Marilyn brought to us here.

13.March Of The Pigs by Nine Inch Nails
Crazy anger from Trent and his band. This was the first single from his huge Downward Spiral album and recorded where Sharon Tate was murdered Charles Manson's minions
14.Still The Same by Bob Seger
 Man, this song is a good song to relax and think about, especially after you rock out to Hollywood Nights.
15.Orgasm Addict by The Buzzcocks
Great band that deserved more credit than they ever got. You can here where all power pop punk bands got there influence. 

16.My Favorite Game by Cardigans
This one sounded so different from  their previous stuff and had a video not played on Mtv because it was too destructive. Nia Pierson and the boys did good with this one.

17.Sexx Laws by Beck
I thought that this would be it for beck but he did make some good tunes after this one as he entered the 21st century.

Classically weird rock from Athens Georgia

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 3

Here is number three! I think this is one of my favorites, please enjoy safely.

1. Hobo Humpin Slobo Babe by Whale
I think this is one of the stranger songs from Sweden to reach our fair American shores. I don't know if it's really about sex with the homeless but if it is it might be the craziest song of the era (early 90s)
2. Thunder Kiss '65 (Swinging Lovers Mix) by White Zombie
Before Rob Zombie did movies he was in this awesome band. Full of old horror movie references and clips they were a unique band. Originally this song was all guitar but KMFDM got their German hands on it and turned it into a danceable club hit.

3. The New Pollution by Beck
This was my favorite song off the Odelay album.


 
4. Cowboy by Kid Rock
This song makes me feel like a rock n' roll frat boy which isn't something I ever aspired to be but I kinda' like it. 
5. Last train To Clarksville by The Monkees
Say what you will about this prefab band, they had real good songs
6. Karma Police by Radiohead
Karma Police, arrest this man! This is what you get when you mess with us. I don't belong to the cult of Radiohead but I do enjoy some of their tunes. This is my favorite video of theirs.


 
7. She's Not There by The Cruel Sea
This cover is from a soundtrack in the 90s, can you name it?
8. Panic In Detroit by David Bowie
Once this was my favorite Bowie Song but now it is someplace in the middle
9. Still In Hollywood by Concrete Blonde
They were a band that sort of rocked for alternative music at the time but then they got weak, this song rocks and is another I hate L.A. songs

10.Panic by The Smiths
Burn down the disco! It's a sing along. If you don't like the Smiths then there's something lame about you.
11.Live forever by Oasis
Once you get past all the blah blah blah of the band you have really great music.
12.Battle Flag by Lo-Fidelity Allstars
This was a dance hit but not much else.
13.Peek-A-Boo by Siouxsie & The Banshees
This was a dance hit but much, much, much more. It's not there best song but it does get you to boogie.
14.What Do I Get by The Buzzcocks
This song was always good but then it got stuck in a car commercial and got heard more than it ever had before.
15.2 Kindsa Love by The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
 The Blues Explosion was never as awesome as this song. They should have been a monster rock band like what the White Stripes became but couldn't do it.
16.Scar Tissue by Red Hot Chili Peppers
The third part of the trilogy, can you name the other two songs?
17.Jumping Someone Else's Train by The Cure
The Cure were not always what they became. Their songs weren't always about being the hurt lover.
18.It's Not Unusual (Ivo's Version) by Belly
Yeah, the Tom Jones' song covered and then remixed. I was a big fan of Belly but then they got uninspired.
19.L.A. Woman by The Doors
Great song! Epic and mysterious. Jim Morrison was an original and has been copied ever since. 

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 1

So obviously I am a huge music fan/geek and with that it is without a doubt I love creating mix tapes; I've been doing it since the 80s! So what I'm gonna start doing is suggesting a weekly mix based off the CD's I started making over a decade ago which will explain why there's nothing too recent. You might find the songs ridiculous or you might find them awesome, who knows. Anyway give it a go or just let me know what you think. Each of these mixes will indeed fit on an 80 minute CD. I would love just to give you the music but that could get hairy.




1. Goin' Out West by Tom Waits
This is definitely in my top five tom Waits songs; it's not very representative of his work as it really rocks but then again it is off of Bone Machine

2. Fed Up by Lemonheads
Punkabilly! One of the Boston bands that people seem to always remember even though they just had the one hit with It's a Shame About Ray.
3. Tin Machine by Tine Machine
 David Bowie never rocked this hard! I'm glad he got down to it though.
4. Search & Destroy by The Stooges
Can there be Bowie without Iggy? They were linked  in so many ways back in the 70s. This song is really what punk is all about, sloppy, dirty, angry and loud!

5. Gloria by Them
Van Morrisson's band before he went solo. This song has been covered by everybody from the The Doors to Patty Smith but the original is still the best.
6. Jack-Ass by Beck
Beck gets mellow. This is off that great album Odelay
7. Five to One by The Doors
They were great and they were copied by almost everybody . . . well Jim Morrisson was. Truly one of the most dynamic,  mysterious and drunk front men of all time.
8. Kool Thing by Sonic youth
Maybe my favorite Sonic Youth songs and not because Chuck D's on it and not because it's about LL Cool J.
9. Hot Stuff by Donna Summer
Disco diva number one!
10.Horny by Mousse T.vs. Hot n' Juicy
I thought this song was great but now I find it unbearable.
11.Dangerous Type by Letters to Cleo
More Boston on Boston action. A band from Bean town covering another of the Hub's best, The Cars.
12.Rocks by Primal Scream
Primal Scream is one of those bands that critics praise as the innovators of Madchester and who am I to argue. I kept hearing this was a rolling Stones cover but the Rolling Stone's song doesn't sound like this.
13.More Than A Feeling by Boston
Because I'm from Boston I have no choice but to say I like this song even if I'm not really that fond of it.
14. Spanish Eyes by U2
This was a B side from the Joshua Tree days. You know you're good when your leftovers are better than many people's best.

15.That's The Way (I Like It) by K.C. & The Sunshine Band
Why do I disco so hard?
16.Bodies by Sex Pistols
British Punk was outrageous and these guys were at the forefront of it all!
17.Fly Away by Lenny Kravitz
Not Lenny's best but it wasn't bad, this is when he started to put his music in commercials
18.That's Entertainment by Morrissey
 Morrissey covering the Jam. he slows it down and makes it his own.
19.Starfuckers, Inc by Nine Inch Nails
When I first heard this song I couldn't believe Nine Inch Nails came through but the rest of the album The Fragile wasn't quite as awesome.
20.Plaster Caster by KISS
The biggest band in the world, at least that's what they will tel you. The merchandising kings, the biggest sellouts is what others will say. This song however is ALRIGHT!

Lastly I should also note that as I begun making mix CDs I was trying to continue from where the mix tapes left off so I didn't use any songs that I had used before but as time went on I through that idea away and used anything that hadn't been part of the CD series. The reason for this was I realized it was going to make the mixes stronger and more awesome for listening pleasure. Things I've also learned about mix tapes is they can't be rushed; they must grow organically and be fussed over until all is sound and feels complete. I've rushed a mix before and I regretted it as I had to go back a rework it which made me feel like some time traveling freak.
