Made in the heart of 2011 I got pretty current with the songs on here, maybe too much emphases on the modern rock and not enough classic stuff but whatever it's good stuff.

When this song I liked it because of the driving beat and and the sliding/whiny vocals; it was why a good friend of mine hated the song. The video is . . . well you be the judge.

8. Dance With Somebody by Mando Diao

This is not the Whitney Houston  song about being tired of one night stands this is Swedish awesome music that shares that Duran Duran spirit I think.

9. Relax by Frankie Goes To Hollywood

I had no idea they were gay, all the girls in the video seemed to love so much!

10.Lazy Bones by Wooden Ships
I don't know if this song rocks or it's just silly
11.Endless Blue by The Horrors

This is from their newest album. Why do they get more and more ethereal and weird, what happened to their creepy nervous angst and rocking spirit?

12.Summer of '89 by Butch Walker and The Black Widows

This song is actually pretty dumb but it's funny and feel good rock so it gets on the mix. Also because I quite enjoyed 1989.

13. Hey Ladies by the Beastie Boys

Yup, from 1989's masterpiece, Paul's Boutique. Okay, I don't know if that's a step too far but the album m did shake asses and get sampling into the next level.

14.No Church in the Wild by Kanye West and Jay-Z

A good beat goes a long way, y'all! I really like some of the songs on Watch The Throne. I don't think it's my favorite album of the year but it's definitely in the top 5! "Your Love is my scripture" That's some cool ass lyrics.

15.Apple Blossom by The White Stripes

On the other side of things this is just a man and his guitar.

16.Maggie M'Gill by The Doors

I used to not care for this sing, thought it was dumb but now I enjoy the bluesiness of it and like to get it on just like the people Tangie Town.

17.Irresistible Forse by Jane's Addiction

Welcome back boys, welcome back with a song that's not great but enjoyable on some level of unoffensive.

18.Olé by Pearl Jam

I like when old bands can keep their energy up. This is a new 2011 song by the old boys that I find quite cool.

19.Silver by Nirvana

I don't know if you can have one without the other. Peral Jam without Nirvana is like The Beatles without the Stones, sort of.

20.Mama, I'm Coming Home by Ozzy Osbourne
and you can't have grunge without metal. This is a great, big stupid sing along that Lemmy of Motothead wrote.

Let's get the band back together, man

Seattle music and the grunge era is now twenty years old, firmly and securely letting me know that I am past due. Recently I've had conversations with friends of mine about that era what it all meant if anything. There was a time when all involved would say it meant nothing but as age has set in and paid off well as well a s a documentary on Pearl Jam I'd say that note has changed. At the time it was supposed to be counter culture or the rise of the underground but now I see it as just more Rock under a different label. There was great music and not so great music but the funniest thing is that I never saw any of Seattle bands live which makes me feel quite lame. I almost saw pearl jam in Boston about five years about I passed that up to have dinner with old friends.
So instead of lamenting that, I made a Seattle Mix which isn't just the early 90s big four Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alic In Chains it's the bands that I know and like from that region, even Aberdeen. No Tad, no Sir Mix-a-lot. It thought about putting a modern Alice In Chains song on here but as good as the song is it didn't feel right, I wasn't sure if the Foo Fighters counted so I left the  off also I almost put L7 on here before I realized they were from LA. No Stone Temple Pilots because while they fell under the grunge label at the time they were from southern California as well. This leads me another point would be a mix of all the bands who get lumped into the Seattle grunge department even though they had nothing to do with it, there were bands from Boston that got were lumped into that genre as I recall. Jeepers, I should put out my best of Boston mix too, i should go city by city. Anyway enjoy it. Click on the song title to hear it.

1. Queen Bitch by Green River

The band that started it all, members of Mudhoney and Mother Love Bone and then Pearl Jam made up the line up.

2. Crazy On You by Heart

Hell yeah, Heart! Sure they were horrible in the 80s but their music in the 70s was hot.

3. Bed of Roses by Screaming Trees

Not one of the big four, Screaming Trees were the authors of a lot of airplay. Their biggest hit, I Nearly Lost You was overplayed and got a big life from it's presence on the Singles soundtrack.

4. Touch Me I'm Sick by Mudhoney

This is what indie rock is all about, loud and obnoxious and dumb.

5. Here She Comes Now by Nirvana

Great little cover of Velvet Underground expanding the original version by three minutes of fuzz. The biggest band of the era. RIP Kurt.

6. I'm Above by Mad Season

Some called them a supergroup as they were made up of Alice In Chains and Pearl Jam members but when you take a look at all the mingling in the Seattle bands it's just another project. Temple of the Dog is not on this mix but they are a good example of the incestuous nature of the scene.

7. The King is Half-Undressed by Jellyfish
These guys were all the buzz for a couple months with a Queen/Beatles sound back in 1990. The singer was the drummer and stood upright when the performed. I guess Sheila E was also an influence.
8. Jesus Christ Pose by Soundgarden

It doesn't get much heavier than this or as frenetic. Some say nothing off the Badmotorfinger album can compare with the Superunknown album but I disagree. Chris Cornell has got the greatest pipes to come out of Seattle since the Wilson sisters of Heart, I mean holy shit that dude can sing!

9. Negative Creep(live) by Nirvana

This is my favorite Nirvana song and that may be an annoying hipster sort of thing to say but I just love how hard this song is, how out of control it seems.

10.Nutshell by Alice In Chains

None of the big 4 could be more dark Than Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell's band. This song is somber if not down right depressing and as per usual about addiction.

11.Lump by Presidents of the United States of America

You remember this ditty, right? Weird Al even parodied it. They preferred to be called PUSA for whatever Seattle reason. They were one of those bands that would have never made a name for themselves if it hadn't been for all the big bands in the area. Coat tails anyone? This was the Seattle band you little sister got into after it was over.

12.Are You Experienced? by The Jimi Hendrix Experience

He was from Seattle and he was buried there so deal with that if you disagree. This is the greatest guitarist in rock, right? Hard, psychedelic beautiful.

13.Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden

Psychedelic and beautiful, spoon fed to the masses. This song more than any of the others has grown on me.

14.Would? by Alice In Chains

Not only soft and acoustic but big and aggressive with amazing harmonies. This song wasn't supposed to be on the Dirt album but it's notoriety from the Single's soundtrack pushed it on. This is my favorite Alice In chains Song.

15.Barracuda by Heart

Man did they rock this jam! Could anybody even cover this song and do it justice?

16.Do The Evolution by Pearl Jam

Those who know me know that this is my favorite PJ song. Why? I don't know. It's lo-fi, angry and doesn't sound like Pearl Jam. Additionally the video is super cool!

17.Silent Lucidity by Queensryche

Before the Grunge fad, this was Seattle. It's still a big epic sweeping song that I enjoy.

18.Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns by Mother Love Bone
RIP Andrew Wood, you were born to be a star but it wasn't meant to be. Pearl Jam also does a great version of this song.

Weekly Mix #68

This is one of the worst mixes I've ever put together. Sorry for the let down but hopefully you can get a little joy out of some of it. There are quite a few covers on here so that makes it sort of fun. Next weeks is totally better.


1. I Wanna Rock by Twisted Sister

I guess I really just enjoy kicking off mixes with 80's rock. This song got some notoriety when closed minded Atlanta Braves pitcher John Rocker. Twisted Sister made him stop using it as his walk on music.

2. So So Special by The Bardo

You don't know this band and don't pretend you do. They seem like good ol' boys playing good ol' rock and who knows, maybe they are.

3. K.I.A. by JET

Killed In Action, JET continues to suck and blow all at once but it's sometimes the only rock out there.

4. Down by 311

Chill! Rap and rock together at last! Well not really, they just expanded on the genre. Is this their biggest hit?

5. Meds by Placebo

Take your prescription drugs, be better, that's what this song is about.

6. This Is Why I'm Hot by Mims

Some songs make you feel cool/hot this is one of them. It makes me want a yacht and and all that goes with it.

7. I Told You I Was Freaky by Flight Of The Concords

Joke music is sometimes better than the real thing.

8. The One by Slaughterhouse

Hey! More rap rock that sucks! It was a free download.

9. Ain't No Rest For The Wicked by Cage The Elephant

This song is kinda' groovy but then it sucks all at the same time.

10.Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen

This is the original, not the Jeff Buckley version or one of those stupid American idol attempts, this is the old man getting weird.

11.Don't Worry Baby by The Beach Boys

Romantic and backed with a huge Brian Wilson sound; this song is emotional and tender

12.Bad Romance by Lady GaGa

She can't really sing, she can't really dance  and she looks are Medusa like but she's a star. Every song she does is taken from someplace else almost shamelessly; this one to me starts off sounding like Eurasure.

13.Hang Up the Pinup by Cobra Killer

Here is your buzz saw indie rock for the week; it's the sort of song that evil elves would listen to.

14.Heartbreaker by Nirvana

Kurt replies, "I don't know it" to a fan who yells for the band to play the Zeppelin classic and then figures it out as if the hammer of the gods came down and smashed it into him. His vocals are proof to some sort of anguish at least.

15.Nice Boys by Rose Tattoo

Australian rockers showing up and getting down. Not everything down under is AC/DC and INXS

16.You're Crazy by Guns N' Roses

G n' R covered Rose Tattoo's  Nice Boys and they even covered this song on their EP. 

17.California Queen by Wolfmother

My interest in Wolfmother ended with their second album and it probably should have ended before that. More Aussie rock!

18.Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows by Lesley Gore

Leslie Gore is crazy as I've stated before, how can she sing this song, It's My Party and Now It's Judy's Turn To Cry? Wacky!

19.Hungry End by Dan Sartain

He's had much better songs and this one just seems like he's in a funk

It's a little ditty that makes one want to skip along the sidewalk

21.Long Tall Sally by The Backbeat Band

Remember this movie, Backbeat, starring Stephen Dorf as the fifth Beatle? The band they used to do the music had a line up that included Dave Pirner , Thurston Moore, Mike Mills, Dave Grohl and a couple other dudes; it's very aggressive pop.

22.Red Right Hand by Arctic Monkeys

Cover Nick Cave takes balls, I like the original best butu this version has a bit more speed.

23.Murder By Number by The Police
When this came out it wasn't on the record and only on the cassette. Sting and the boys show their humorous side by explaining you can kill people and rhyme.

Weekly Mix tap 49

Let's here it for 2006! I recall it being a darn good year for some thijngs and crumby year for other things. This mix was birthed that year but there are only a few songs that represent it.

The almost rocked but there was something a little too silly about them.

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 38

There is a lot of huge songs on this mix and a lot of oldies in respect to the time the mix was made. There are only two songs from same decade which is against my current way of thinking which requires more modern tracks with old highlights that show genre and influence.

This is what star power is all about, only a band like Duran Duran could pull off a song like this and make it seem awesome, only a band like this could do a video like this with Simon Le Bon riding the bowsprit.

2. Communication Breakdown by Led Zeppelin

So powerful, heavy and fast this song was when it came out in 1969 that it caused the Beatles to break up.

3. Barracuda by Heart

And while we're on the topic of powerful and heavy, this song goes the full distance! Rocking out full bore!

4. How Soon Is Now? by The Smiths

Some have labeled the best song of 1980s and I don't disagree. While initially I found this song morose and depressing, I couldn't resist it's sonic beauty. Johnny Marr's guitar work is beautiful factories, passing cars and emotional. It is a song that never charted in the states by a band that wasn't even as popular as The Cure but there's nothing else like it. Not even U2, R.E.M or Guns n' Roses could accomplish something like this.

5. New Model No. 15 by Marylin Manson

He can suck it a smile, not bad. Apparently he has adult film talent singing in the background but all I hear is Marylin's whiny bark.

6. Draw Your Breaks by Scotty

After all that power guitar we're taking it mellow and to the Caribbean island of Jamaica.

7. Here Comes the Hotstepper by Ini Kamoze

This is a feelgood song not in the way that makes you walk on sunshine but the kind that makes you feel cooler than shit and strut.

8. Wrong Way by Sublime

A song about hooking up with a girl who has unfortunate family issues by a guy who OD'd twice in the same tenderloin hotel. Rest in Peach Bradley.   

9. Roots Radicals by Rancid

Even though they were from The East Bay they always seemed more British than their contemporaries, Green Day and Offspring.

10.What' I Say, Pt 1 by Ray Charles  

Some of the best organ in popular music, ever. The groove and rhythm travel and get the blood in motion.

11.Hey Sailor by The Detroit Cobras

I've never seen this band live but I have heard they smoke more cigarettes than any other band. this is whiskey lovin' blues rock.

12.Daddy Never understood by Deluxx Folk Implosion

Straight ahead loud from the notorious motion picture, Kids.

13.Sing Your Life by Morrissey

I thought this was a happy song when I first heard it but that's the way it is with the best song from this man.

14.Jesus Christ Pose by Soundgarden

Let us return now to crazy guitars that rip up the fabric of reality, dig into your mind and demand satisfaction. Chris Cornel used to be such bad ass motherfuckin' singer and then fame happened.

15.Big Empty by Stone Temple Pilots

This was the song that made STP  cool to me. I didn't quite bond with the first album but this tune was soulful, bluesy and huge and available on the Crow soundtrack as well as the bands second album.

16.It's Only Rock n' Roll (But I like It) by The Rolling Stones

Classic rock must be represented. I must have been real hot for this song at the time I made the mix because I rarely ever play it. Maybe I just needed a song.

17.Jealous Again by The Black Crows

I hated this song for years, I hated this band for almost as long as I hated the song but I mellowed and realized it wasn't that bad.

18.Portland, Oregon by Loretta Lynn and Jack White

Some people said this was their favorite song from 2004 but I disagree. It is a good tune about gin drinking though.

19.Where Did You Sleep Last Night by Nirvana

  When Nirvana's Unplugged album came out I told myself I wouldn't buy it unless the Leadbelly cover was on it. The amount of pain and agony Kurt Cobain emotes through his voice is enough to make you shutter and almost agree to help him pull the trigger.

20.Hey, Hey, My My (Into The Black) by Neil Young

This is the story of Johnny Rotten or at least that what Neils says and who knows, maybe it is but if you read or heard Kurt Cobain's suicide note you know that he incorporated it into his rock n' roll story.

There's not a lot of modern music on this mix even for the year it was made in 2005 but there is a lot of British music.

Before the word "Epic" became synonymous with annoying exaggeration this song was nnown for wacked out it's video, this was one of the first rap/rock bands to make a splash in the mainstream.
2. Nuthin' But A "G" Thang by Dr. Dre feat. Snoop Dogg
Classic rap from a man who is becoming the Axl Rose of the hip hop world; it's been 17 years since this album came out.
3. Higher Ground by Red Hot Chili Peppers
This was the bands MTV breakthrough from 1989. Stevie Wonder's original never dreamed of big drums like these.
4. My Friend Goo by Sonic Youth
What is this song about? Some say it's a bout a the dumb poser girls who go to rock shows and some say it's about a bitter slut.
5. Boogie Shoes by K.C. & The Sunshine Band
Having just bought the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack used and cheap I began to revisit an album I listened to all the time when I was 5 years old; it still sounds good.
6. You Can Get It If you Really Want by Jimmy Cliff
Music from the 1972 film, The Harder They Come. I've never seen it.
7. Jive Talkin' by Bee Gees
This is one of the rare disco era Bee Gees that's more groovy than over the top disco; it;s also from Saturday Night Fever
8. No Wow by The Kills
Every song the Kills do sounds just like this. Alison Mosshart went on to be in The Dead Weather with Jack White.
9. Blue Orchid by The White Stripes
And speak of the devil, Jack White appears with his first band. Listening to the vocals I often wonder if this song is a joke. For the record this mix was made years before the Dead Weather existed which goes to prove that there is a cosmic unconsciousness.
10.Molly's Lips by Nirvana
Catchy, catchy, catchy grunge pop, change the music and it could be a song from the 60s
11.Sign Your Name by Terence Trent D'Arby
The ballad that followed the hit Wishing Well, Mr. D'Arby proves he has a heart.
12.Like Glue by Sean Paul
He will not play number two and that's all I can understand in this dance hall song.
13.We 'A' Rockers by Inner Circle
Continuing our Jamaican music we have the theme to Rockers  a movie I Know I saw in the theater in 1978 because people tell me I have. Rockers is the other reggae movie.
14.Alright by Supergrass
This band was third part of the Brit pop invasion of the mid 90s following Blur and Oasis
15.Main Offender by The Hives
More rock from the land of Thor and Odin. I wonder if these guys got beat up by the death metal guys?
16.Weirdo by The Charletons
Manchester, so much to answer for. This is from the sophomore album by the band that were second only to the Stone Roses . . . and maybe the Happy Mondays in that rock sub genre. The Charlatans  however made more records than all of them with a much longer career.
17.Lost In The Plot by The Dears
This song wants to be a Smith's song so bad. Canadian rock sometimes comes through but . . .
18.I Started Something I Couldn't Finish by The Smiths
there's nothing quite like the real thing. Off the bands final album, Morrissey croons the line, "Typical Me, Typical Me, Typical Me", it's funny.
19.There She Goes by The La's
This song was bigger than the band and that's why they never put out another album. I can think of at least two covers of this song but the original is still the best. I saw The La's play a free show at the Hatch Shell in Boston in 1991.
20.Porcupine by Mary's Danish
Grunge era rock that wasn't grunge but still encapsulated the early 90s angst and "irony".
21.Missing by Beck
Kind of a trippy Latin number but not quite; it's a weird one
22.Vasoline by Stone Temple Pilots
This song is better in retrospect than it was at the time, like most of STP. I mean that in a good way. When Velvet Revolver performed this song it rocked a bit harder than this which is awesome!

Boston Punk from the mid 80s

This mix is damn good and if you don't like it well you can go read somebody else's blog about mixes, somebody who knows how to get song samples or the whole song to play when you click on it, a blog with more pictures, a blog that thrills! One thing keeps bugging me though as I look over these tunes, is the song order the best it could be? If you think no, suggest something better, please.

Great cover of Cypress Hill, maybe better than the original.
8. Kids In America by Kim Wilde
This song is so synthtacular the 80s couldn't let it go. In the video Kim was apparently so nervous she looked like she was trying to be seductive. (I read that someplace)
9. Get Ur Freak On by Missy Elliott
Changing the way we talk about sex and a really weird sounding rap song when you get down to it. Very innovative. I believe the video was directed by Hype
10.Still OF The Night by Whitesnake
80s Heavy Metal was rarely more epic; if you don't like this song it's only because you can't handle it.
11.Boyz-N-The-Hood by Dynamite Hack
One of the best covers ever? No, just one of the funniest. The video is perfect.
12.P.I.M.P. by 50 Cent
Steel drums in rap might not be popular but damn does it works here. Not that 50 Cent cares what I say about him but I think this is best track.
13.Mr. Brightside by The Killers
Eric Roberts has seen better days and that unfortunately is what everybody thinks of when this song plays. It was also a sign that band's name, The Killers was a misnomer . . . or ironic . . . or just dumb.
14.I Believe In You by Kylie Minogue
More disco magic from the future. If Kylie Minogue believes in you things can't be all bad.
15.Hysteria by Muse
I swear the guitars in the beginning of this song make me think it's all about to explode and then the drums come in and take care of that.
16.Hey Ya! by Outkast
Was this the best song of year? It has hand claps, sexy/dirty lyrics and a beat that a friend insists is hooked into girl's heads.
17.Touch Me I'm Sick by Mudhoney
Named after A Russ Meyer movie, this was Seattle in 1988, this was grunge before it got labeled as such, this is the genesis of Citizen Dick.
18.Isrealites by Desmond Dekker
I first heard this song in the movie, Drugstore Cowboy so it's what I think about when this song plays . . . wow, two Matt Dillon references in a row, WTF!

I think I had recently purchased a Hip-Hop compilation which busted out like crazy on my speakers and influenced my mixes.

3. It Takes Two by Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock
When I first heard this song it was ON! I thought it was freaky and super damn cool! It catches your attention with those gasps and shouts; it was too cool to possibly be a huge hit but there it was, awesome.
4. So What'cha Want by The Beastie Boys
This is the first Beastie Boys song I ever liked, everything before it was annoying. Later I grew to appreciate Paul's Boutique
5. Pennyroyal Tea by Nirvana
From the album In Utero which was supposed to sound horrible but really just sounded like the next level of grunge.

This isn't eh album version, it's a more stripped down version makes the song much more ballsy and heartfelt. They took out all the reverb and synth and replaced it with cello and piano.

Alright here's your listening fun for the week that will fit onto a CD if you are so inclined or a tape cassette with 45 minute sides each. The Story on this mix starts with Waiting for the man and carries through the end of the mix; it ain't hard to see what I'm getting at.

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 14

That's right I'm putting forth a bonus mix because these Mixes seem week and uninspired. Maybe I'm wrong and I just can't recall why the mix was so awesome at the time. I think the real issue with this mix is the lack of current music on it for the time I made it; it sounds more like a weird rehash without any real cohesion. The songs aren't bad but . . . I don't know, I've done better. I think I hit a low point in my consumption of music and was getting into songs looked over from before. These mixes may stay this way for a while but we shall see . . . There will be another Mix on Thursday! I dunno the songs are good but the flow . . . she is weird.

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 8

IS this mix intriguing? Maybe, what was the purpose of putting two Beatles inspired bands on it with the word some form of believing in the title? This mix also contains R.E.M. at their most cryptic; I don't think Michael Stipe even remembers what the lyrics meant. A Boston shout out goes to Buffalo Tom, Letters to Cleo and Lemonheads. Yup, I like this mix quite a bit, "The Wanderer" is one of U2's and Johnny Cash's best songs. This mix is actually kind of exhausting.

This was the worlds introduction to one of the great British bands of the 80s. Somber, mysterious lyrics, great guitar hooks, what else does a band need?
2. I'm a Believer by The Monkees
The band that people have loved and loved to hate. True they were a manufactured group for television but the songs were really good pop.

 
3. The Only One I Know by The Charlatans (UK)
The Manchester sound or the Madchester sound found another group in these blokes. Keyboard rich that some compared to Deep Purple they even played Hush live in their early days.
4. Mr. Big Stuff by Jean Knight
Switching it up some we get funky.
5. Swan Swan H by R.E.M.
What the hell is this song about? "girl and dog he bore his cross" It's a great tune.
6. Crazy On You by Heart
Fantastic classic rock that starts off as a noodling acoustic thing but then  brings the rock in a big dramatic. Barracuda and this are my favorites by Heart. People used to say the Wilson sisters were lesbians, I don't know if that's gross or understandable.

7. Negative Creep (live) by Nirvana
Raw, noisy, abrasive,  frightening, this is my favorite Nirvana song and the live version From the Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah is so god damned insane and brash it makes the studio recording seem like a little demo from beneath the bed.
8. Sad Girl by Lemonheads
A song about a mess of a chick
9. Christine Sixteen by Kiss
This song is ridiculous but it's Kiss and there's nothing you can do about it.
10.Pumping On Your Stereo by Supergrass
 swear they're singing humping on your stereo.
11.Ziggy Stardust by David Bowie
The theme song for the album is just a classic example of Bowie's willingness to lose himself in an idea.
12.Jealousy by Liz Phair
She was huge in 1994 but then she had a kid and disappeared. Not really but if would have been better if she had.

 
13.Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin
Easily one of my top five Zep songs. There is so much power and might from the hammer of the gods! If this song doesn't get you going on some viking berserker rampage, nothing will. 
14.Taillights Fade by Buffalo Tom
It might as well be a power ballad in the anti power ballad era.
15.I Feel Love by Donna Summer
Sexy disco.

 
16.Parallel Universe by Red Hot Chili Peppers
This is about the last time I enjoyed a Chili peppers' in earnest. After this they checked their balls in and mailed it in. Congrats though, they made it to the Rock N' Roll Hall OF Fame.  Oh yeah that means so much. 
17.Slow Dog by Belly
Belly was a band that came from  Throwing Muse and was big for 1993.
18.Heroin Girl by Everclear
This song doesn't really jibe well with the rest of the bands crappy melodic sing alongs. It actually has oomph and punk notions!
19.Happy Jack by The Who
I don't care much for the Who but this song is good.

 
20.Step Back by Letters to Cleo
I thought this song was one of the best of 1994 but nobody listened to me for just reason. It's catchy but it's never been a hit.
21. Let's All Make Believe by Oasis
One of the few shining moments from Oasis' post Morning Glory days.
22. The Wanderer by U2 and Johnny Cash
Who would have thought Cash and U2 would record together? This song is a great American song despite it's weirdness. The lyrics are excellent, ironic, funny and creepy.

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 7

This is the latest in the Mix tape chapter. What can I say about this one? Life Is Sweet and White Riot both have sirens. Stop the Rock and I Try are two songs I never listen to anymore. She Sells Sanctuary is the Cult's best song. Oasis and The Beatles can go together so seamlessly it's embarrassing. Even though there are lots of hits and well known songs here I think this was a throw away mix for me, I would strip this one down and use the songs in future mixes if I things worked that way.
Just a reminder These Mixes all fit on an 80 minute CD.

1. I Try by Macy Gray

I'm not against soul and R&B. This doesn't prove anything because it was a huge pop hit. Macy was supposed to be the next big thing and while she was around for a few years she fell off the face of the charts after a couple albums.

2. She Sells Sanctuary by The Cult

Not much "alternative" music rocked like this back in the mid 80s. This is one f the all time greats of the era and genre. The psychedelic beginning that gives way to straight ahead rock is gorgeous; it seems to get better with age.

3. Gallows Pole by Led Zeppelin

This song grew on me as a lad and now I thoroughly enjoy the boys idea of American bluegrass and folk. It's one of the two poles I stay away from

4. Fashion by David Bowie

On the other end of things is Bowie. Who doesn't like Bowie? 

5. Life is Sweet by The Chemical Brothers

With help from Charlatans lead singer Tim Burgess, The Chemical brothers put out one of their best tracks. The Exit Planet Dust album was a huge change in my music appreciation. When I heard it I wanted to nothing but groove out and got to raves.

7. Drain You/Aneurysm (live) By Nirvana
Typically I stay away from using the same artist back to back but these two live versions are so killer together I had to do it!
9. I Am The Bullgod by Kid Rock
 He was kind of a badass back then or at least he fronted like he was. This song is great for feeling full of testosterone.
10.Another One Bites The Dust by Queen
One of the most famous bass lines in rock. One of the greatest bands ever with possibly the greatest front man of all time. We miss you Freddy.

12.Pump Up The Volume by M/A/R/R/S
This dance track changed my view on what type of music I listened. I heard it my freshman year of high school when I was defining myself as a rocker. Maybe if I was more obsessive I would have become a DJ after hearing this or started some weird teenage boy dance club.
13.Stop the Rock by Apollo 440
This dance number was British but it's sort of stupid and jock like now.
14.Don't Look Back In Anger by Oasis
Noel Gallagher sang this track which was off the bands monstrously huge sophomore album, What's the Story Morning Glory album. Song after song after song was so enjoyable I didn't know if I was an idiot or not.

15. All You Need Is Love by The Beatles
Is this my favorite Beatles song? That's one of those questions that varies from week to week but for the sake of argument we will say yes.
16.Put Your Lights On by Santana
I am not a Santana fan, I am not an Everlast fan but these guys made a song that was one of my favorites of 1999. This is from that Santana album Supernatural that won like eight Grammys
17.Ex-Girlfriend by No Doubt
Back when Gwen had a band and wasn't some horrible pop product.
18.In Between Days by The Cure
When you talk about great bands, you must talk about the Cure. They aren't the sort of band that's in vogue but without them there's a lot that doesn't follow. This was the first Cure song I ever heard and when I did I thought it made me weird rather than cool. I should have just enjoyed it and gave the finger to everybody else.

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 6

Obviously not all mixes are created equal and this is one of the lesser ones. I would like to harvest about 60% of the songs on here and create a new mix. I guess I made this one in 1999. I hope you enjoy making attempts to listen to it.

1. Should I Stay or Should I Go by The Clash 
Amongst other things they really knew how to rock and be tough sounding even

 2. Memphis Hip Shake by The Cult
The Cult tried to be  an American band in 1987 and be more ballsy with their rock. Rick Rubin helped them jam.
3. Velvet Roof By Buffalo Tom
Not heard outside of New England, Buffalo Tom were groovy, loud band from Boston. This is my favorite rocker of theirs.

4. #1 Crush by Garbage
Is this even a song? It's as much of a song as Madonna's Justify My Love and has that same sexiness to it. You can find it on The Romeo and Juliet soundtrack.
5. Five Fathoms by Everything But The Girl
They  got into sounding like a club band after Missing was remixed by a DJ and made them a lot of money.
6. Waiting For Tonight by Jennifer Lopez
No Comment

7. Mixed Bizness by Beck
Midnight Vultures was Beck's attempt to make a dance and R&B album. Some of it worked well while other songs were just ludicrous.
8. Sex-O-Matic Venus Freak by Macy Gray
No shame sometimes makes a good song. She tells us how her man makes her behave like a porn star and it's a good thing.
9. Always on the Run by Lenny Kravitz
So god damned cool was Lenny back in the day. All the white kids wanted to be like him. Slash wrote the guitar  for this song and then played with Lenny. 

10.Got Let It Out by Oasis
Not the boys best effort but it's not in retrospect.
11.Made Of Stone by The Stone Roses
The band that was Oasis before Oasis. Only if they had toured in the States . . .
12.Verse Chorus Verse by Nirvana
The Secret track from the, No Alternative album. It's in my top ten Nirvana songs.
13.Porcelain by Moby
Moby was huge for a bout a year and this was one of the reasons why.
14.Kissing A Fool by George Michael
Smokey bars and whiskey were made for this song. This song was back when the former lead singer of Wham! was the brightest star on Mtv and his album, Faith was a genre crossing phenom.

15.Suffragette City by David Bowie
The Spiders From Mars, Ziggy Stardust, they were amazing
16.Guerilla Radio by Rage Against the Machine
I love when a band stays angry!
17.Ain't No Right by Jane's Addiction
Another example how the coolest band in the world in their prime.
18.Fire by The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Classic rock exemplified in one great song by the greatest rock guitarist ever.

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 5

There are more awesome tunes on this mix than you should be able to handle so listen with caution. We have many huge hits like "Sweet Emotion", The Beautiful People" and Wonderwall. and a couple lesser known gems like Morphine's "The Night" which was written just before singer and bassist Mark Sandman passed away on to the eternal B-side. Also Izzy Stradlin showing why he was so important to G'n'R with the frantic "Double talin' Jive"
In addition this mix has one of top 5 favorite love songs of all time, "Everlong"; I'll disclose the others at some point. Speaking of Top Fives, "Bedtime Story" is one of my top Five favorite Madonna songs, did you know that?
Lastly I think this ends the Buzzcocks appearances on my mixes.

1. 20th Century Boy by T. Rex
Sometimes I think T. Rex is the coolest band ever but then I listen to their songs and I feel I've been duped. This is one of Marc Bolan and the boys better efforts. It's cool. 

2. Ever Fallen In Love by The Buzzcocks
Is this their best song or is it Orgasm Addict? So many bands have taken what the Buzzcocks did in the late 70s and made much more money than they ever did. Green Day
3. Sweet Emotion by Aerosmith
There are good songs, there are great songs and then there are songs that take on a life of their own, transcending everything, this is one of them.

 
4. Swallowed by Bush
I was never a huge Bush fan as they were just a grunge clone but I really liked this first single from their second album, Razorblade Suitcase.
5. The Night by Morphine
Posthumously released music is always eerie and often sad, this song is no different. A cool Boston band with a singer who once got stabbed in the chest while driving his cab but he didn't die then.
6. I'm A man by The Spencer Davis Group
Groovy British teenagers singing about being a man, brilliant.
7. Everlong by Foo Fighters
One of my ten favorite love songs . . . EVER!
8. Territorial Pissings by Nirvana
When people say Nirvana was punk I guess this is what they were talking about.
9. Rabbit by Lemonheads
Catchy punk songs about wanting to shag. Awesome!
10.Egg Man by The Beastie Boys
This is the rap reworking of their old ass song, Egg Raid on Mojo. It's on the album, Paul's Boutique which critics have a major chubby for but didn't sell as well as License To Ill.
11.You Should Be Dancing by Bee Gees
You want to know about disco? This is a good place to start. It's not as goofball as some of the genre but it definitely fits. 

 
12.Push It by Garbage
"Make the beats go harder" Shirley sounds great on this track. Once Garbage was a band that mattered but then they began to suck it.
13.Natural One by Folk Implosion
Creepiness comes in all forms including this song off The Kids soundtrack.
14.Sleep Now In The Fire by Rage Against The Machine
Maybe they stopped being the only band that mattered by this point but it was the my favorite song off, The Battle for Los Angeles

17. She Bangs The Drum by Stone Roses
NME said The Stone Roses debut album was the best album ever, maybe they exaggerate but it is a beautiful collection of songs.

This is the song that put him over the top and not just a one hit wonder with a cover as his most known song. Industrial and crazy Marilyn Manson sings about being angry even though it's not real, nothing he did was.
