Weekly Mix #80

I don't know how I feel about this mix. There's a lot of stuff on here that may be forgotten in the near future. I'm partial to great music butu when nobody cares about it . . .
Anyway go listen to these songs and enjoy the exploration of new music!

Mix # 80 from Solidpants on 8tracks.

1. Ezekiel 25-17 film dialogue from Pulp Fiction
Sam Jackson at his best. When I used to make mixes on cassette it was a lot easier to copy film dialogue but I'm not invested enough anymore to do that sort of thing digitally.
2. Highway To Hell by AC/DC

It's definitely one of AC/DC's best songs and the premise is classic rock stuff. They Say when Bon Scott died he was getting his in order but when you choke on your own vomit in your car in front of your house it seems a bit unlikely.

3. Crackerman by Stone Temple Pilots

Here's a song I never really listened to until 2010; I just ignored it. From STP's debut, Core it kicks a little ass.

4. Standing Still by Eat Sugar

This is a great little rock/pop song by a band that I don't think I'll ever hear of again, I loves those drums!

5. Second Chance by Peter, Bjorn and John

I'm so glad this band came out with more than one good new song.

6. Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before by The Smiths
 One of the greatest 80s bands to never make it big in the states. Too good I guess.
7. Blood by The Dears

One of the best modern Canadian bands to never get anywhere in the states

8. Post Break-Up Sex by The Vaccines
Great band name and almost a great song but to sort of tries too hard to sound like something besides a good pop song.
9. I Got You (I Feel Good) by James Brown

The hardest working man in show business, the godfather of soul! Refusing this song is like refusing incredible awesome stuff.

RIP Mr. Brown

10.Come On Get It by Lenny Kravitz

Promises and teases, that's what Lenny's career in music has turned into. This isn't so bad as it almost delivers awesome.

11.Born To Lose by Motörhead

Born to lose, live to win. That's Lemmy's tattoo.

12.Sheena Is a Punk Rocker by Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Evergetic and more poppy than the original Ramones version but still good.

13.Man of Misery by Beady Eye

Liam Gallagher's new band? Goodbye Oasis until 2020 when they reunite.

14.Garbage Truck by Sex Bob-Omb

This one sounds like the previous song, don't it? I don't know which I like better

15.Intro (Dream Sequence) by Alice In Chains

It's loud, short and scary, not really a song.

16.Family Man by Hall and Oates

Hookers were very prevalent on their H2O album ie. Man Eater

17.Before the Rain bu Duran Duran

Don't Hold back the Rain, that was an old song and this is a new song, just as good too.

18.My Kinda Lover by Billy Squier

Before he decided to do weird Flashdance moves in his videos, Mr. Squier had some really good rock/pop songs like this one.

19.Buick MacKane (Big Dumb Sex) by Guns N' Roses

Some people hate The Spaghetti Incident but not me. This is a mix of a Soundgarden song and a Nazareth song and it works.

20.Lost In Hollywood by System of a Down
"All maggots smoking fags on Santa Monica Boulevard" this is a chilly distopian view of Hollywood show business. Angry, angry song.
21.You Showed Me by The Watson Twins

Haunting vocals and stark, lovely.

22.Blood by My Chemical Romance

I have a friend who heard this song and thought this was what the band sounded like, he was not pleased when he heard more of their music. This is indeed a funny little show tune but it's a joke and more of a fun sing along for their concerts than anything else.

23.Get Some by Lykke Li
I heard this song played on the radio once, once. That's too bad, it's a good song.
24.Woo Hoo by The 5.6.7.8's

Japanese retro music made famous in Kill Bill and Vonage adds

25.Loser by Beck
It took this long to get on a mix and I don't know why.

Weekly Mix #72

What we have here is 2010 and ll it's sloppiness. We have four artists trying to make come backs and a couple we'll never hear from again. I have tow sort of fake bands on her, weird.

1. Wild Flower by The Cult
I had just seen the Cult do their Love album live plus  all their hits; it was awesome. It made me go back and feverishly listen to all their songs again and this one from Electric kept getting replayed

2. Jawbreaker by The Dead Weather
More groovy, stoner music
3.Rats In The Cellar by Aerosmith
When you hear guys in their 50s talk about Aerosmith being a very different band in the 70s this is what they're referring to.
4. Fast As I Can by Stone Temple Pilots
This was part of STP's come back album and heavily used for Baseball Tonight's highlight reel on ESPN.
5. Stay With Me by Faces
Rod Stewart and Jeff Beck have never sounded this good again. Maybe I didn't like this 40 year old song until recently but now I love it!
6. The Ghost Who Walks by Karen Elison
The former Mrs. Jack White sings for us
7. Funnel of Love by Wanda Jackson (feat. The Cramps)
She's kind of a legend and she did a song with another kind of legend The Cramps

 
8. Mr. Orange by Dengue Fever
I have no clue what she's singing about

 
9. Vietnow by Rage Against The Machine
Funky metal and a head rush; it works!
10.Here We Are Juggernaut by Coheed and Cambria
It's big and rocking but not great
11.Sweet Disposition by The Temper Trap 
One his wonders can be very awesome things
12.It Never Rains In Southern California by Albert Hammond & M. Havelwood
I think Hammond is the father of one of the Strokes. This is a good song.
13.On Meloncholy Hill by Gorillaz
Plastic Beach was a let down of an album but this little number was okay
14.Murmaider by Dethklok
Not a really band but they still have some wicked numbers
15.Let Me Hear You Scream by Ozzy Osbourne
Why is still good that Ozzy puts out music? Because it's melodious hard rock that makes you pump that fist, throw u the devil horns and bang your head!

16.Fresh by Devo
Yes, Devo had a new song and it was one of my favorites of 2010. The managed to sound modern and keep that Devo sound . . . okay maybe they don't sound modern but they do sound good
17.Dare to Be Stupid by "Weird Al" Yankovic
Parody is the sincerest form of flattery. Al does Devo very well and very funny.
18.She Blinded Me with Science by Thomas Dolby
SCIENCE! This concludes the New Wave portion of the mix
19.Oildale (Leave Me Alone) by Korn
It was a good song but it just wasn't the comeback record of the year. Too long had passed since Freak On A Leash.
20.Heroin by Roky Erikson
Covering the Velvet Underground is a ballsy thing. Cult legend Roky Erikson  pulls this one off by speeding it up adding anguish and getting rid of the pretension.

21.Rocket Queen by Guns N' Roses
I've been waiting to use this song for years but there had never been the right place for it. Yes, that's real sex in the breakdown. If there's one G N' R song you can boogie down to it's this one.

Weekly Mix #71

We are making mixes in 2010 and it feels weak but that's probably my fault as I insist on exploring new music and want to hear what's current. I could make a better mix with the classic but then it would need to be themed or something. There is a decidedly retro theme to this mix though, I mean 90's bands like Alice In Chains and Stone Temple Pilots with their most recent music, a band doing and 80's cover, a song that could be about the 60s, songs from various decades past, a couple bands that want to sound old. Get lost and enjoy.


1. Son Of A Gun by The La's
Underrated band. One album and they broke up, too bad or too good, I don't know

 
2. Waiting For Somebody by Paul Westerberg
If you recall the early 90s you recall the movie Singles; this was one of the main songs from the film.

4. Drunk Girls LCD Soundsystem
Critics adored this song, I just thought it was cool
5. I Would Send You Roses by Codeine Velvet Club
I really like some of their songs as cheesy as they can be
6. Buick Mackane by T. Rex
Glam! Marc Bolan getting sexy
7. Summer of '69 by Bryan Adams
 I heard this was a song about a sex act and I suppose I can believe it but really?
8. Time of the Season by The Zombies
What's your name? Who's your daddy? Is he rich? Is he rich like me? This is from 1969.
9. The Broken by Coheed and Cambria
More epic rock!
10.Slow Poison by The Bravery
A friend told me to check this song out and so I did; it's not bad.
11.Stylo by Gorillaz

Mos Def and Bobby Womack assist on this excellent number; this could be the last good thing Gorillaz ever do.

12.Die by The Drop by The Dead Weather
Jack White will never die. This is a groovy tune by his third well known band.
13.Your Decision by Alice In Chains
Alice In Chains do a couple things really well and making somber acoustic numbers is one of them. IS this a ballad to late singer Layne Staley, maybe.
14.Sweet Young Thing Ain't Sweet No More by Mudhoney
This was grunge before it had a name and before it got sold to the millions
15.Bitter Tears by INXS
Such a good band. Hutchence was a great front man, i don't care what you say.

If nothing else these guys do good covers
17.Your Nation Will Die by Burning Brides
Another song that was recommended to me by a friend. None of their other songs sound like this; it's their angry song!
18.Magnetic Warrior by Archie Bronson Outfit
This is kind of a stupid and boring song but whatever it's something different
19.Between The Lines by Stone Temple Pilots
Welcom back STP, you've made it a lot further than anybody would have guessed
20.Doctor Alibi by Slash

The man, the myth, Lemmy Kilmeister lends his gravely vocals to this effort. What this proves is that Slash needs a front man and song writer.

21.Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen
If you're from New Jersey you have no choice but to love this song; it was made for you. This song is epic and I wish I got a chance to hear it live.

Weekly Mix #62

As a reminder these Mixes are all 80 minutes or less to fit on a CD. That notion is sort of old school I guess but how else would one person gift another person a play list; I suppose you could gift each song to somebody but that's weird. I'm sure people who are much more savvy than I have better ways of sharing music but I'm just a simple dude who is always in the dark about tech stuff.
Anyhow this mix is another  2009 ensemble; it's was a little weak and tossed together when I first made it but I eventually went back and moved around some of the songs to be more cohesive and flow better. The newest songs on the mix are certainly not the big hits from the year though it seems that I know knew them best from their placement in television adds. That's sad when I hear the newest music in car and cellphone commercials instead of the radio or whatever.

1. Dead And Bloated by Stone Temple Pilots
The more time that passes the more I realize that Core is a classic album of it's era up there with Nevermind, Dirt and Ten. This is how that album started and this is how this mix starts!
2. Bag It Up by Oasis
A stomping, plodding rocker, not bad but not good enough to get them back to their supersrar status of the mid 90s.
3. You Make Loving Fun by Fleetwood Mac
Groovy seventies hits for all! Christine McVie on vocals.
4. Foundations by Kate Nash

One relationship ditty deserves another. This is a funny and sad breakup song or at least it wants to be a breakup song which is what makes it sad.

5. Thank You Boys by Jane's Addiction
The band that defined alternative rock gets a little jazzy
6. Take Five by Dave Brubeck
West coast jazz at it's most popular
7.  It was a Good Day by Ice Cube

From West Coast Jazz to West Side Rap. Maybe the best song on the mix and definitely Ice Cubes best tune. I'm not gonna lie if i had a day this this I'd want to rap about it too.

8. Two Weeks by Grizzly Bear
This song was in several commercials throughout the year. The album Veckatimest is named after an island off the coast of Massachusetts.
9. Hippi Luv by The Wolfmen
From bears to wolves. Groovy big tune that I've never heard anywhere but my stereo.
10.Bus Stop by The Hollies

The original Manchester band. This is a great melody and a nice little love song!

11.Time Has Come Again by The Last Shadow Puppets
This song should have been on the last mix but here it is in it's echoes and mope
12.Black Grease by The Black Angels

Groovy Sixties inspired rock from England. Welcome to the mixes guys!

13.Iron Man by Black Sabbath

More Black bands without black members. This song is brutal. It is about war and revenge and all things metal. If you put your trust in war it will kill ya'! Best part of the song is when the Iron Man start laying waste to the people who once relied on him for protection but then shunned him for his wickedness. "Heavy boots of Lead"

14.I Cut Like  a Buffalo by The Dead Weather

Jack White is back with another band, gone are the White Stripes, gone are the Raconteurs. This is a stoner's dream.

15.Count In Fives by The Horrors

because organ can be so cool when done right, hers' another tune that exploits the instrument's awesomeness. Another excellent tune from the Strange House album.

16.Dead End Friends by Them Crooked Vultures
John Paul Jones is back and playing with Dave Grohl and Josh Holme. I was a bit let down by this project but this song has grown on me.
17.Youth Gone Wild by Skid Row

One of the last glam metal bands of the eighties to get big, Skid Row's anthem was this number. I think the singer, Sebastian Bach even tattooed it on his arm.

18.Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler
Some lush always sings this song at Karaoke bars. If you were a child of the eighties you may recall the unusual video here's the version that will clear the whole thing up. (Click me) 
19.On My Way by Billy Boy On Poison

This song was used in some commercials for cold medicine I think. It's a cool rock song with blues lyrics

20.They're Red Hot by The Red Hot Chili Peppers
Covering Robert Johnson and covering it very fast. It's cute I suppose.
21.Let It All Hang Out by The Nails

Covering the Hombres, The Nails do a good job with this one and make them more than the band that did 88 Line about 44 Women

Weekly Mix #57

This Mix was made in 2007 and while sort of seems like a collage of unrelated songs there are a couple threads here and there. Pantera shows up for the first time. A couple one hit wonders also show in the forms of Blind Melon and The Toadies. The most outlandish song is That Ain't Right. Enjoy the music if you can!

Majestic, Gothic pop from the 80s

2. Rockers to Swallow by Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Karen O get's a lot of her vocal sounds from Siouxie so I thought I'd compare the two side by side.
3. Pretty Green by Mark Ronson feat. Santo Gold
The previous song ended with, "hey!" and this one begins with, "hey"; it makes a lot of sense. Ronson put out this album of his music and singers he liked; it worked. The beat of this songs goes well with the next.
4. Freedom 90 by George Michael
A good song that was maybe more famous for it's video which featured the day's super models and not one image of the singer.


 
5.This Is Hardcore by Pulp
Moody, haunting, sexy and totally coked out!
6. Gloves by The Horrors
The Horrors were my favorite band at the time when this mix was made in 2007
7. No Rain by Blind Melon
Say  little prayer for their dead singer Shanon Hoon and enjoy this classic 90s song about a boy and his bong.
8. Hey, Good Lookin' by Hank Williams
Didn't ever listen to the cowboy until the mid 00s and then I thought he was pretty cool
9. Broken Boy Soldier by The Racanteurs
Creepy music by Jack White and friends
10.Misery Business by Paramore
Poppy music with a chick singer and a almost rock guitars. If anything I learned what the word paramour meant after hearing this band.
11.Crazy Bitch by Buckcherry
Where to start . . . Notorious. What I've learned about this song is that while some women don't appreciate this song at all while others use it as their ring tone. The guitar part was written by Slash.
12.Unglued by Stone Temple Pilots
In many ways STP are like those 70s bands that everybody but the reviewers liked. This song is a good rocker.
13.That Ain't Right by Heavy Trash
 Cowboy up and listen to this tale of domestic troubles. I think this was a joke band but I have no idea really.
14.Tick Tick Boom by The Hives
Not only is this the bands best song but sports broadcasts love to use it as the clock ticks down.
15.Could This Be Magic by Van Halen
One of the stranger pieces of music Van Halen put out as it's just a little acoustic guitar, foot tapping and Diamond Dave singing about boozing it up and having a great time in the tropics. Actually the other guys do step in for the chorus.
16.The State of Massachusetts by The Dropkick Murphys
This songs starts like an Irish sea shanty but then explodes; it's what the Dropkicks are good at.
17.Fucking Hostile by Pantera
While most rock bands were getting weak and lame, Pantera was insistent on being METAL! They rocked very hard and gave teenage boys hope that somebody understood them. Hell, listening to this song now get's my adrenaline going. Welcome to the world of my mixes. Rest In Piece Dimebag.
18.I Don't Wanna Stop by Ozzy Osbourne
A good metal effort by an old man on the wrong medication. I first heard this gem in a car which made it more awesome than it really is.
19.Possum Kingdom by The Toadies
Our second stop on the weird 90s review is this song about . . . well I'm not sure, girlfriend murder, maybe?
20.Elizabeth My Dear by The Stone Roses
Just a minute long this isn't really a song and was used just a s filler. Though a song about killing the queen of England to the tune of Scarborough Fair is super weird.
21.Stronger by Kanye West
This song has nothing to do with the rest of the mix but it was there for using so I took it and ended my mix with a dance beat!

Weekly Mix #55

New Arrivals! peter Bjorn and John, Amy Winehouse, Cold War Kids, Justin Timberlake, Silversun Pickups and the Horrors! This mix was better than I thought! On this mix I started to put more emphasis on new music rather than a couple new tunes surrounded by oldies, for better or worse I think it works very well here! So go and listen, the Heretix song is hard to find btw.


1. Enter Sandman by Metallica

Before this song Metallica was a speed metal band that terrified all. The black album was released and suddenly they were just a big rock metal band that made more money than ever before.

2. Down by Stone Temple Pilots

This is a good song to have as an alarm in the morning. This may be the last ++ song they did.

3. Young Folks by Peter Bjorn and John

PB&J gave whistlers something hot! There's a sweet melancholy in the romance of this Scandinavian band's biggest hit to date. We can welcome them to the mixes too.

4. You Know I'm No Good by Amy Winehouse

From 2007's best album, Amy Winehouse got very real with us in her do wop, soul way.

5. The Chauffeur by Duran Duran

Off one of the great 80s albums, Rio. In live shows, Simon does poetry to this song and whips about a flute from his trousers . . . AWESOME!

6. Sexyback by Justin Timberlake
This song was so huge it even made me want to dance and up until this song I loathed Justin Timberlake and all his mouse buddies.
7. Big Man With A Gun by Nine Inch Nails

Loud, short and nasty

8.Sick, Sick, Sick by Queens of the Stone Age

This song does in fact sound ill

9. Crazy by Patsy Cline

A classic bar room song and heartbroken song

10.You Only Live Once by The Strokes
The New York Boys seemed to loose steam on their third album; it would be five years until their next release.
11.Awake by Letters To Cleo

This song was supposed to be huge for the Boston band; it was supposed to be their big second hit after their song, Here and Now that was on the Melrose Place soundtrack. Never happened for 'em.

12.Sherriff by Heretix

One good Boston band follows the other.

13.Got Me Wrong by Alice In Chains

Let's set the way back machine to 1992 when Alice and Chains came out with their Sap EP.

14.For the Girl by The Fratellis

This song is pleasant

15.Baby, Please Don't Go by Aerosmith

This is from Aerosmith's old rock rhythm and blues album; it was sort of silly as everything sounds too slick.

16.Walk Away by James Gang

Joe Walsh playing guitar and being the man before he got drafted by the Eagles to make them rock.

17.Icky Thump by The White Stripes

Not their best effort but still so good!

18.Hang Me Up to Dry by Cold War kids

 Good song by a little known band

19.She Is The New Thing by The Horrors
Organ is back in a creepy Adam's Family rock style
20.Identify by The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
Critics loved them for a while but for me this album was the only one worth it's balls
21.Common Reactor by Silversun Pickups.

I like this song tons! I liked it much more than their single at the time,  Lazy eye. If Billy Corgan wasn't so insane and full of himself this is what the fourth Smashing Pumpkins album would have sounded like and there would have been great rejoicing instead of a collective, "whateveh" I hope you like reverb!

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 38

There is a lot of huge songs on this mix and a lot of oldies in respect to the time the mix was made. There are only two songs from same decade which is against my current way of thinking which requires more modern tracks with old highlights that show genre and influence.

1. Rio by Duran Duran

This is what star power is all about, only a band like Duran Duran could pull off a song like this and make it seem awesome, only a band like this could do a video like this with Simon Le Bon riding the bowsprit.

2. Communication Breakdown by Led Zeppelin

So powerful, heavy and fast this song was when it came out in 1969 that it caused the Beatles to break up.

3. Barracuda by Heart

And while we're on the topic of powerful and heavy, this song goes the full distance! Rocking out full bore!

4. How Soon Is Now? by The Smiths

Some have labeled the best song of 1980s and I don't disagree. While initially I found this song morose and depressing, I couldn't resist it's sonic beauty. Johnny Marr's guitar work is beautiful factories, passing cars and emotional. It is a song that never charted in the states by a band that wasn't even as popular as The Cure but there's nothing else like it. Not even U2, R.E.M or Guns n' Roses could accomplish something like this.

5. New Model No. 15 by Marylin Manson

He can suck it a smile, not bad. Apparently he has adult film talent singing in the background but all I hear is Marylin's whiny bark.

6. Draw Your Breaks by Scotty

After all that power guitar we're taking it mellow and to the Caribbean island of Jamaica.

7. Here Comes the Hotstepper by Ini Kamoze

This is a feelgood song not in the way that makes you walk on sunshine but the kind that makes you feel cooler than shit and strut.

8. Wrong Way by Sublime

A song about hooking up with a girl who has unfortunate family issues by a guy who OD'd twice in the same tenderloin hotel. Rest in Peach Bradley.   

9. Roots Radicals by Rancid

Even though they were from The East Bay they always seemed more British than their contemporaries, Green Day and Offspring.

10.What' I Say, Pt 1 by Ray Charles  

Some of the best organ in popular music, ever. The groove and rhythm travel and get the blood in motion.

11.Hey Sailor by The Detroit Cobras

I've never seen this band live but I have heard they smoke more cigarettes than any other band. this is whiskey lovin' blues rock.

12.Daddy Never understood by Deluxx Folk Implosion

Straight ahead loud from the notorious motion picture, Kids.

13.Sing Your Life by Morrissey

I thought this was a happy song when I first heard it but that's the way it is with the best song from this man.

14.Jesus Christ Pose by Soundgarden

Let us return now to crazy guitars that rip up the fabric of reality, dig into your mind and demand satisfaction. Chris Cornel used to be such bad ass motherfuckin' singer and then fame happened.

15.Big Empty by Stone Temple Pilots

This was the song that made STP  cool to me. I didn't quite bond with the first album but this tune was soulful, bluesy and huge and available on the Crow soundtrack as well as the bands second album.

16.It's Only Rock n' Roll (But I like It) by The Rolling Stones

Classic rock must be represented. I must have been real hot for this song at the time I made the mix because I rarely ever play it. Maybe I just needed a song.

17.Jealous Again by The Black Crows

I hated this song for years, I hated this band for almost as long as I hated the song but I mellowed and realized it wasn't that bad.

18.Portland, Oregon by Loretta Lynn and Jack White

Some people said this was their favorite song from 2004 but I disagree. It is a good tune about gin drinking though.

19.Where Did You Sleep Last Night by Nirvana

  When Nirvana's Unplugged album came out I told myself I wouldn't buy it unless the Leadbelly cover was on it. The amount of pain and agony Kurt Cobain emotes through his voice is enough to make you shutter and almost agree to help him pull the trigger.

20.Hey, Hey, My My (Into The Black) by Neil Young

This is the story of Johnny Rotten or at least that what Neils says and who knows, maybe it is but if you read or heard Kurt Cobain's suicide note you know that he incorporated it into his rock n' roll story.

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 37

There's not a lot of modern music on this mix even for the year it was made in 2005 but there is a lot of British music.

Before the word "Epic" became synonymous with annoying exaggeration this song was nnown for wacked out it's video, this was one of the first rap/rock bands to make a splash in the mainstream.
2. Nuthin' But A "G" Thang by Dr. Dre feat. Snoop Dogg
Classic rap from a man who is becoming the Axl Rose of the hip hop world; it's been 17 years since this album came out.
3. Higher Ground by Red Hot Chili Peppers
This was the bands MTV breakthrough from 1989. Stevie Wonder's original never dreamed of big drums like these.
4. My Friend Goo by Sonic Youth
What is this song about? Some say it's a bout a the dumb poser girls who go to rock shows and some say it's about a bitter slut.
5. Boogie Shoes by K.C. & The Sunshine Band
Having just bought the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack used and cheap I began to revisit an album I listened to all the time when I was 5 years old; it still sounds good.
6. You Can Get It If you Really Want by Jimmy Cliff
Music from the 1972 film, The Harder They Come. I've never seen it.
7. Jive Talkin' by Bee Gees
This is one of the rare disco era Bee Gees that's more groovy than over the top disco; it;s also from Saturday Night Fever
8. No Wow by The Kills
Every song the Kills do sounds just like this. Alison Mosshart went on to be in The Dead Weather with Jack White.
9. Blue Orchid by The White Stripes
And speak of the devil, Jack White appears with his first band. Listening to the vocals I often wonder if this song is a joke. For the record this mix was made years before the Dead Weather existed which goes to prove that there is a cosmic unconsciousness.

This song was bigger than the band and that's why they never put out another album. I can think of at least two covers of this song but the original is still the best. I saw The La's play a free show at the Hatch Shell in Boston in 1991.

Stone Temple Pilots

So it's been almost ten years since STP released an album and even longer since they released anything good. Since then their sinewy Scott Weiland has released shitty solo records and fronted the band Velvet Revolver which also included Duff and Slash of Guns N' Roses incase you weren't aware. Honestly I don't care what the other members of Stone Temple Pilots were doing in this time, maybe they were thinking about a new Talk Show album or maybe they were counting their millions and raising families. Whatever.

So, Stone Temple Pilots has released this new self titled album which has the quality of being very easy to listen to as it flows from song to song without any real moments that would cause me to skip a song. Gone are the days of the grunge era's version of the Doors and here is a Californian, 70s, country, rockabilly influenced sound which is not breaking any new ground but it is worth listening to.
The first single, "Between the Lines" is what you would expect from a band of 40 year olds, the music moves but doesn't have that heavy sound that the band has used, the melody is catchy as are many of Stone Temple Pilots tunes. The other real rocker is, "Fast As I Can" which can be heard on ESPN's Baseball Tonight as filler music. "Huckleberry Crumble" is a cool Aerosmith, "Rocks" era influenced song.
Their is nothing on the album in the way of a ballad like "Interstate Love Song" or "Creep" and nothing rocks as hard as "Sex Type Thing" or even, "Down". At worst the songs canseem like the little brothers of "Lady Picture Show" and "Sour Girl" at best it's a catchy mid tempo rock record.

I'm not handing out stars or amps or scale it from 1 through 10 but I will say this album is worth a listen

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 11

This weeks mix has got some sweeping songs, some anthem caliber songs if you will. This mix has the capacity to be the greatest mix ever buut it's not; it's sort of like the Yankees of mix tapes every song is an all star (a side from Post Card Blues, Free and Veda Very Shining). I would say some of these songs shouldn't be together on a mix because they are so powerful they could destroy one another. Lets examine and enjoy shall we?
