Weekly Mix #76

What can I say about this 2010 mix that features many solo artists and few current big hits? I just don't know. There's really no theme here though some of the songs are paired for perspective like  No Better Than This and Rock Around The Clock. Others are used as examples of what is and what shall never be.

Not one of their finest but it's sort of funny

Indie rock that sounds bigger than it could ever possibly be. More music from the Scott Pilgrim movie

A fun little ditty from 1969 or if you prefer it was on the Boogie Nights Soundtrack
12.Hey Boy by Mark Ronson
Getting down to the light danceable beats of the producer as artist.
13.Well, Well, Well by Duffy
Her second album wasn't as good as the first but as far as modern, British , soul singers go I think this is still better than Adele.
14.Young Men Dead by The Black Angels
Shamefully I learned about this song while watching a video game commercial.
15.Only You by Portishead
This song! It is like a person you carry a torch for years after the relationship was over; it's up there with some of the most wrenching pop songs I can think of. I suppose it's there best song.
16.Games Without Frontiers by Peter Gabriel
If you like a little French in your pop music this song with make you happy!
17.Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley & His Comets
We are going way back now to 1956 when all this rock n' roll actually meant something more than what it does now.
18.No Better Than This by John Mellencamp
You are a good man John Mellencamp and I applaud your roots rock!
19.Tatooine by John Messersmith
A song about a fictional place from the Star Wars saga. It's actually not so much about light sabers and tie fighters as it is about choosing ones path and wanting something more. It's a lovely little song and definitely one of my favorites from 2010
20.Kashmir by Led Zeppelin
One song about the desert deserves another. For many years this was my favorite Led Zeppelin song; it's epic and powerful just like the band it's self.

Weekly Mix #74

If I had thought harder about this mix there would be an REM song and the Replacements song would have been Left of The Dial. Another time perhaps. This is groovy 2010 mix with a whopping 24 songs!

Written by Beck for the Scott Pilgrim movie it is what garage rock should be, short, loud and fun!

2. Shout At The Devil y Mötley Crüe

The crew rocked the 80s like nobody else. Were they a good band? No they were a horrible band but they rocked and somehow they still tour and play to thousands.

3. I'm So Sad, So Very Very Sad by Crash and the Boys

Also from the Scott Pilgrim movie, this one is 13 seconds long and embraces the humor of Rock!

4. Black Rain by Soundgarden

I don't know if this is a new song or an old song or what but it's not bad and it's loud.

5. Quiet Kid by Dead Confederite

Not too big of a fan of this band but tune is grungy modern

6. The Sun Ain't Gonna' Shine Anymore by The Walker Brothers

How deep is your wall of sound? This is a great heartbreak song as it's sweeping and maudlin. The sixties had some amazing music that wasn't by The Beatles.

7. Hot Child In The City by Nick Gilder

Statutory rape? Nah! I don't know, maybe she just looks young, she said she was eighteen. The seventies were a groovy place where you could get away with more creepiness.

8. Tighten Up by The Black Keys

I suppose this is a good example of rock in 2010. I mean it's more white R&B than anything else but 2010 didn't rock so loud, did it?

9. I Don't Believe You by The Thermals
Indie Rock . . . sometimes you are a great thing and sometimes you are just like everybody else. These dudes are from Portland OR.
10.East Bound and Down by Jerry Reed

Theme from Smokey and the Bandit. It's a stupidly awesome song

11.It's Getting Boring By the Sea by Blood Red Shoes

Can you tell that I loved the Scott Pilgrim soundtrack? Here's more music that I totally dug!

12.What Is Life by George Harrison
A Phil Specter masterpiece! This is just a great sounding song from Mr. Harrison's All Things Must Pass album. Love it!
13.Razors by Vermillion Sands

Remember what I said about I Don't Believe You? Well the same applies for these guys.

14.Snobby Little Elf by Morningwood

Well produced Indie Rock is still Indie Rock, especially when it's from New York.

All hail the king! This is a simple ditty but it's so good!

17.Romeo Had Juliette by Lou Reed

Maybe the last good music Lou put out was from his 1989 album, New York.

18.Wouldn't It Be Nice by The Beach Boys

Knowing anything about Bryan Wilson is depressing and sad which is why this song isn't a nice as it should be.

They got big on this song, such a large sound for them.

Working dudes everywhere partied to this song while I was still in high school thinking it was all stupid. Kind of still do. I'll say it again My Chemical Romance are current incarnation of Poison.

23. I'll Be You by The Replacement

Critical darlings from Minneapolis! This was what Indie bands in the eighties turned into once signed. This was from the album Don't tell A Soul and supposed to be their big cross over album so they could be bigger than R.E.M.

24.Tell Me Why by M.I.A.
She has more than Paper Planes though nothing is quite that good.

Here we go with another 2009 creation but with three songs from 1984, do yo know them off the top of your head? This whole mix is very 80s feeling.


1. Here I Go Again by White Snake

Hated this song until just a couple years agao when suddenly I decided I was David Coverdale

2. Check My Brain by Alice In Chains

The boys from Seattle are back but not with lead singer Layne Staley who overdosed on Heroin some years back. This song rocks!

3. What You Need by INXS
We're going back to the 0s when pop and rock found perfect harmony . . . another band, another dead singer.
4. Empire State of Mind by Jay-Z feat. Alicia keys

Because New York needs another anthem, a more modern one.

5. Come Together by The Beatles
This is weird song but it sure is groovy. As I made this mix this song was all over the television as the main song on some music video game.
6. Sort Of by Silversun Pickups

This is a dizzying song, frantic and almost desperate and still showing Billy Corgan that they're better at being him than he is.

7. Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) by David Bowie

One of my favorite Bowie tunes, what phase was this?

8. Uprising by Muse
This is from Muse's huge The Resistance album that spawn a lot of good music. This is not the best song on it and that's okay.
9. Make It Take It by Amanda Blank

Just a club girl and her ambitions

10.Magic Man by Heart

Try to understand, he's a magic man; he's got magic hands. One of Heart's big three, Magic Man, Crazy On You and Barracuda. Some say this song is sleazy and they're kind of right; it has a dark 1970's vibe.

11.Drive by The Cars
This song was so huge it's hard to explain, maybe it's the Mutt Lang produced synthesizers deep woosh or Benjamin Orr's vocals, maybe it was the Timothy Hutton directed video with Paulina Porizkova. Whatever it was this song represents the band at the hugest commercial point. It's not their sunniest tune but it's arguably their best.
12.Kind of a Girl by Tinted Windows

Their are some who say the Cars were a shitty synth New Wave band that never made a impact on music but just listened to songs like this by almost super group Tinted Windows. Members of Hanson, Cheap Trick and Smashing Pumpkins came together to produce this 80s inspired ear candy.

13.New Girl Now by Honeymoon Suite

Speaking of the 80s . . . Beisdes Rush and Bryan Adams this is what was going on in Canada. This is New Wave rock magic. Big drums, keyboards and echo laced vocals. Props to the video for having a Delorean!

14. For What It's Worth by Placebo

This band always makes me think of the 80s but I don't know why. This ain't no Pure Morning, showing that they aren't a single note group again. The brass in the song is a bit disarming.

15.Pretty In Pink by Psychedelic Furs

Here's more of the real deal. This I believe is the original version not the more excitable version they did for the movie.

16.Tangled Up In You by The Mumblers

This is not Bob Dylan but I suppose the song title might be an allusion to Tangled up in Blues.

17.Wake Up by The Doors

I love some of Jim Morrison's live poetry; it's very charged with lizards and sex.

18.Yellow Ledbetter by Pearl Jam

The best song that was never on a an album. It is so mellow it makes me think of 80s beer commercials.

19.Hippy Hippy Shake by Georgia Satellites
From the movie Cocktail, this song was nothing in the gigantic shadow of Tom Cruise's star power and The Beach Boys Kokomo
20.(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You to by Weezer
Is this Weezer's most epic song? It's a big one and that's why it caps off the mix.

This song sounds like a clash outtake and is pretty good; they never lived up to their billing as the next big thing/ the next Strokes but this tune is cool, especially the intro.

2. Sex On Fire by Kings of Leon

This song signified the Kings joining the mainstream and the end of them as an interesting indie class band.

3. Kickstart My Heart by Mötley Crüe

When I saw them a couple years ago in 2008 they opened their shows with this monster.

4. Cheap City Thrills by Alleycat Scratch

Glam metal was alive and well in 2008 as this retro gem proved. with exception to the weak solo, these guys nail the feel and sound.

5. Do it Again by Steely Dan

A band named after a pleasure implement in a William S. Burroughs novel. I was fiending to this song when I made this mix; i though it was the best song ever for about two weeks

6. Something Burning by The Stone Roses

This is one of the songs the Stone Roses had to record in secret as they were in court with their record label; it's a smooth one.

7. Chain of Fools by Aretha Franklin

The queen of soul, pay your respects

8. You Can't Hurry Love by The Supremes

No you can't. Motown had some fantastic hits come from it, this would be in my top ten.

9. Girlfriend in A Coma by The Smiths

When this song came out we all laughed but all loved it.

10.Who Can Say by The Horrors

Back with a more sweeping sound, the got away from the abrasive choppiness that I loved so much. The keyboards are still pervasive.

11.Mother by Danzig

His one big hit. He channels Jim Morrison in this one.

12.Thirteen by Johnny Cash
Covering Danzig's song; it cool and more somber than ominous
13.These Times They Are A-Changin' by Bob Dylan

Folk music at it's commercial peak.

14.Pork and Beans by Weezer

A little ditty in the midst of a big chorus, they've been paying homage to the Pixies for so long now.

15.Know Your Enemy by Green Day

This was there follow up to the huge 2004 effort, American Idiot. It's not quite as great.

16.Messing With My Head by Tinted Windows

The greatest New Wave band of the new millennium. Members of Hanson, Smashing Pumpkins and Cheap Trick formed this one shot band; it's good listening and should have been used in an eighties movie about a fictional eighties band.

17.Rebel Rebel by David Bowie
Bowie doesn't do it any better than this, nor do many others. Teenagers experimenting unite!
18.Poker Face by Lady Gaga

Not only does she owe Madonna a lot but she owes Bowie a lot. This is the sort of songs androids like to kiss to.

19.Words. by Missing Persons

Oh yeah here's another group that influence the previous artist.Actually they are more influential than one might think. I don't even know if people know they're influenced by them. Is that subversive?

Weekly Mix # 63

So I looked at this mix and thought about the songs and realized that almost all of them have been used in adds or movies, crazy! Enjoy this 2009 created bad boy!

1. Everybody Wants To Rule the World by Tears for Fears

Some songs from the 80s really deliver on their era, this is one of them but I can't exactly explain why. I suppose Songs from The Big Chair was the high point for these Brits though Sewing the Seeds of Love was also pretty big too..

2. Feellin' Alright by Joe Cocker

I was obsessed with this song for a bout month when I made this mix which is why it sauntered in here.

3. Zero by Yeah Yeah Yeahs

It's a groovy song by some hipters from New York. The video was filmed in San Francisco's China Town

4. Troublemaker by Weezer

And suddenly Weezer just kept on truckin'. It seemed like they were faded into the past and then they made a comeback and never left us.

5. Any Way you Want It by Journy

Classic rock of Journey and memories of Caddy Shack

6. Same Ol' Situation by Mötley Crüe
Great band and strange band, The bassist writes all the songs but doesn't sing and the most famous member in the group is the drummer. The Dr. Feelgood album was the pinnacle for these L.A. hair gods even though they still tour.
7. Down With the Sickness by Disturbed
It took a couple years for me to be into this Nü Metal classic but now I enjoy it. This appeared in, Queen of the Damned when Lestat's band was about to go on stage . . . or was this the song his band did?
8. Ulysses by Franz Ferdinand
 These guys just put out groove after groove with great melodies, The tuxedo the singer wears in the video is slick and if I had thousadns at the time I would have owned it and rocked it better!
9. Panic Switch by Silversun Pickups
This crazy song was used in Sucker Punch. There's something desperate in the sonic craziness of the music that I really like.
10.Desolation Row by My Chemical Romance
A song on the Watchmen soundtrack, I think it's one of their five best songs. "Cinderella, she seems so easy" Coooool f'ing lyric. They even play the national anthem in this song; it has to be good!
11.Lit Up by Buckcherry
A song about getting high but could be used by G.E. to premote their lightbulbs
12.I  Can't Drive 55 by Sammy Hagar
Before he teamed up with Van Halen, Sammy was the red rocker and complaining about traffic and speed limits, now he sings national anthems at Giant's games.
13.John Walker's Blues by Steve Earle

Maybe the best song having anything to do with the Taliban; it's moving.

14.Paper Planes by M.I.A.

If you didn't hear this song in 2008 you probably are reading this blog for research on popular music. It was huge, it won M.I.A. awards and possibly made her a one hit wonder. I always thought this song was about drug dealing but I've never been able to confirm this.

15.Falling Down by Oasis

I still don't know why songs like this one didn't lead to a huge Oasis come back. Dig Out Your Soul had good stuff all over it.

16.Fall Is Just Something Grownups Invented by The Hives
Yup, this is the Nickelodeon  Channel theme rocked out by the Swedes
17.Mr. Hurricane by Beast
The name of this band isn't right, there isn't anything beastly about them though this is cool song for sure!
18.Daylight by Matt & Kim

More music from Hipsters; it's very catchy. You may be familiar with the tune as it appeared in a Tanqueray Gin TV add.

19.Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want by The Smiths

Morrissey can emote like no other. An instrumental version of this tune was used in Ferris Bueller's Day Off during the Museum scene.

This tune was used in an Axe spray cologne add featuring the queen of eyebrows Adrianne Curry
21.Let There be Rock by AC/DC
Even AC/DC sold out! This rocker was the theme to a Rock Band video game release.

I think I had recently purchased a Hip-Hop compilation which busted out like crazy on my speakers and influenced my mixes.

This is the last good song the band ever recorded
3. It Takes Two by Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock
When I first heard this song it was ON! I thought it was freaky and super damn cool! It catches your attention with those gasps and shouts; it was too cool to possibly be a huge hit but there it was, awesome.
4. So What'cha Want by The Beastie Boys
This is the first Beastie Boys song I ever liked, everything before it was annoying. Later I grew to appreciate Paul's Boutique
5. Pennyroyal Tea by Nirvana
From the album In Utero which was supposed to sound horrible but really just sounded like the next level of grunge.

From the much maligned Second Coming Album; it's a departure form the sparse danceable Stone Roses of the first album and filled with bass and rock guitar
22.Who's Gonna' Ride Your Wild Horses (Temple Bar Mix) by U2
This isn't eh album version, it's a more stripped down version makes the song much more ballsy and heartfelt. They took out all the reverb and synth and replaced it with cello and piano.

This one was also done back in 2002. It continues my Aerosmith adoration as well as my discover of that trippy band, Clinic. I first heard them in a Border's book store while on the 3rd St. Promenade in Santa Monica where Patricia Richardson was being shown the way to a private bathroom. 00s Countdown: The Top 10!!!

Yours is not mine and that's the important thing here as we get down to the nitty gritty of the countdown, the final 10 songs that seem to me to be the ones that deserve to be. If you read the top 10 albums of the decade this will make more sense.

10. It's a Wonderful Life by Sparklehorse
Dreamy, somber and lyrically a bit off, "It's a Wonderful Life" has nothing to do with the Jimmy Stewart movie you see every December. It was a hit but the song sticks in the mind life the odor of fresh bread in the morning.




9. Young Folks By Peter Bjorn and John
PB & J caught your ear with a whistle and a eerie mix of melancholy and hope. Theygot into your ear with that sweet echoing whistle that eaither hooked you or revolted you or in many a case, both. It's just a simple boy meets girl song that could as well in 70s R&B format as it did in modern rock format.



8. Paper Planes by M.I.A.
Thanks to the Clash, M.I.A. got huge! The "Straight to Hell" sample taken out of context is not so sad but still cold to the spine. So she says this song is about driving a cab but I think this means something different than it does to me.



7. Hash Pipe by Weezer
I could have gone with "Beverly Hills" but this one returned the 90s sweater wearing geeks to the limelight. The song is driving and could be tough if it weren't by Weezer.



6. Lose Yourself by Eminem
Embracing movie magic Mr. Mathers got an Oscar for this song about wanting fame, getting fame and living life unhappy. Why this song over, "The Real Slim Shady" or "Without me"? Eminem keeps his habds to himself rather than taking off color jabs at his peers. I never saw "8 Mile" but I hear he lives in a trailer and dates Brittany Murphy



5. Welcome Home by Coheed & Cambria
Welcome to the world of Rock n' Roll heaven! It is epic and powerful like the hammer of the gods, yes I mean Led Zeppelin. The songs makes you desire a long drive preferably in a van with a wizard painted on the side.




A note about the top four: An argument for each of these songs can be made for any of the top 4 slots including number one; it really depends on what constitutes your ranking system for me it's just arbitrary which may or may not send one into a violent rage over the miscellaneous order they've been presented with. I still don't know if any of these songs will be thought about in a few years or if there will be such a backlash against the worst decade ever that all things 2000s will be snarled at like the 1970s were for nearly 30 years. It's possible this is a reason for the lack of any hip-hop in the final four; the music even to it's biggest fans has always had a disposable tag on it. I've entered discussion with rap fans about older songs and am usually put down by a scoff about the song being old and not worth bring up. One can make the same argument with dance music as well, while the song is hot it is the greatest thing thing ever but once it's been overplayed and something else has come along, the piece is discarded until it comes back around at weddings and retromance TV shows, nostalgia programming if you will. So why does rock get to han around for longer? Are fans of the genre stuck in their youth? Is rock n' roll's lexicon so brilliantly better than others? Are rock fans fetishists? I don't know but it does seem that for past ten to fifteen years that even the most mediocre bands like Quiet Riot, Great White or Ratt can ride the retread music circuit playing small gigs for quite some time; there's always some dude that wants to hear, "Round and Round" just one more time.

4. Last Night by The Strokes
Sing along with the strokes song about being a 20 something year old dude wanting something he can't put his finger on. This is New York rock in the 2000s, love it or hate it it was low-fi and reminiscent of the 1970s.



3. Rehab by Amy Winehouse
She won so many Grammys for singing about loving her vice that the weight snapped her brittle bones. Her 60s flavored R&B tale was catchy and seemed to hit a chord with people who love to drink.

She may never win a beauty contest but at least she's got pipes

2. SexyBack by Justin Timberlake
Even I wanted to dance when I heard this disco! Some songs have a life of their own creating lingo and small economies, this track is one of them. Though the song isn't really about anything other than being cool and it's all good.

1. Seven Nation Army By The White Stripes
What can I say about this raw, angry, heartbroken song that has a massive thundering bass drum beat carrying you through to end? It has a "bass" line that is hypnotic a guitar solo that feels like the brae of wild stallion struggling for it's life and lyrics that are cryptic yet very understandable like all the best.

Albums? Top 10? 2000s? Really?

A friend posed to me that top ten albums are more important than a top 100 list of songs. I argued that nobody buys albums so what does it really matter. So this will be a retro tribute to the 90s, 80s, 70s and even the 1960s when the Album concept was launched. We have come 360 in our music listening units, granted it’s no longer on a wax 45s but in a digital MP3; there are no more B-Sides, no more hidden gems to find that are too out there for mainstream radio. Nor will there will be pieces like, “Hey Hey, What Can I do” which didn’t make it to Led Zeppelin’s III album because Jimmy Paige was so messed up he ruined the end of the recording leaving the song to be designated as “The Immigrant Song” B-Side. No more Singles like Sam Cooke’s “Shout” which originally was a two sided single where side A ends as he sings, “Now waaaaaaaaaait a minute . . .” and then the DJ would either have to flip the wax over as quickly as he could or buy a second copy for another turn table.
This countdown will be a memorial to vinyl, cassette and even CD’s which introduced the hidden track. Notables include John Mellencamp’s rendition of the Hombres’, “Let it All Hang Out” and Nirvana’s “Endless and Nameless” that appeared on Nevermind, sort of.

Anyway here's the top ten albums of the decade!


1. Elephant (2003), The White Stripes
This isn't the cute White Stripes from before, this is the White Stripes post break up. Jack white is disillusioned, and angry. The opening track, "Seven Nation Army" relays this fury with the pounding bass drum that pulls you through the song down to Wichita via wild horse to get as far from the pain as possible. Through the story of the album Mr. White gets lost, gets angry, gets tender, lonely and gets possessive sometimes all in one song. Even though Meg White sings, "In The Cold, Cold NIght"; it's still Jack's story of desperation. "The Hardest Button to Button" we find our man trying to accept all the bull and swallow his pride. By the finally of the album which is a joyful sing along with Holly Golightly, "Well It's True That We Love One Another" you need it. It offers the hope for the new and the short memory of painful break ups.

2. Back to Black (2007), Amy Winehouse
So much more than a 1960's R & B tribute, Amy Winehouse delivered one of the best albums about dysfunction we've had in a long, long time; it's no mistake this Album took home Grammy's galore. We travel with Amy as she refuses to get clean on the huge "Rehab", as she finds out her man's been cheating her in "Me & Mr. Jones", as she cheats on her man in "I'm No Good" and as she plays the other woman in the title track all in triumphantly wonderful production. When you follow the story on the album you feel unclean for knowing far too much about her troubled romance but you will go back and listen again because the songs are so complete and make you ask, "What kind of Fuckery is this?"

3. Is This It? (2000), The Strokes
Yes. Yes, this is it. This bands arrival on the scene was statement that garage bands were still out there even if it was a three car garage band. With a sound that can be compared to The Velvet Underground's less edgy stuff, The Stooges less loud stuff and even the Cars early stuff. The strokes wrote catchy tunes with awesomely crappy low-fi sounding guitar about not getting along with girls. The big single, "Last Night" finds our singer Julian Casablancas crooning about his lack of reason behind walking out on his girlfriend in such a way that nobody in the history of the universe will ever understand. The title track, "Is This It?" he argues with his girl about things that are creating a rift in their romance. Every song on the Album is a joy to listen to and has some drive to it, "The Modern Age" is a fine example of the foot tapping, head nodding effect the songs have.

4. The Black Album (2003), Jay-Z
He hailed it as his final album and it was remixed by DJ Danger Mouse as the Gray Album (which some find to be a better album) The Black Album containing two totally kick ass and iconic tunes "Dirt of Your Shoulder" and the Rick Rubin rocker, "99 Problems". The album in many ways typical of a rap album as the star boasts but also keeps it real by informing us of his tough roots. As his "final" album Jay-Z goes out on top and from the looks of things he's stayed there . . . just not on this list.

5. Marshal Mathers LP (2000), Eminem
Slim Shady grows up . . . sort of. The second album from Eminem shows us that he still has a soft spot and an cutting edge for pop culture in the mega genre crossing, "The Real Slim Shady" where he makes fun of Mtv's party line expecting to be demonized for it but obviously it didn't work out that way. Some peole say the album is shocking, others hilarious and some call it a very personal work; it is in fact all three at various times. On "The Way I Am" Eminem doesn't defend himself in any other way than stating that he is who is his for better or worse as he explains that he should have to defend himself in the first place but the media likes to pick on him; he even gives a shout out to Marilyn Manson. The Album is the rapper at the cross hair of being a f'd up guy who can't choose between getting high or taking care of his daughter and an entertainer obsessed with the entertainment industry. Sure he says he want to kill his wife but he also dresses up like Britney Spears.

6. Dangerously In Love (2003), Beyoncé
An R&B diva arrives! Beyoncé releases her first solo album after her career with the many faces of Destiny's Child. The vocals are strong, the songs are gold and the sales were enormous. From the very beginning of the first song, "Crazy In Love" you are pumped with energy and primed to shake your ass on the dance floor. Generally the album is ripe with dance numbers like, "Naughty Girl" which the chanteuse does her best Donna Summer and "Baby Boy" which brings in dance hall rap dude, Sean Paul for some heat. She gets intimate on the tune, "Gift From Virgo". There are several songs to give Beyoncé street cred by including the likes of Big Boy and her man Jay-Z. It's a solid pop collection that at it's best is very enjoyable and at it's worst it's harmless.

7. Weezer (green) 2001, Weezer
The nerds make a comeback! When Hashpipe hit the air I was shocked to find out that the band was still around; I had thought that they sank into 90s oblivion but that was not the case. Not only did this album put them back on the map but it let them expand there sound into more fun style rock pop. "Island in the Sun" is a sweet little melody that is fun to chill out to. "Knock-Down Drag-Out" and "Photograph" are the strong power pop tunes as well.
The Green LP relaunched the bands career making them decade long mainstays releasing catchy tune after catchy tune making a greatest hit album totally awesome!

8. Yeah Yeah Yeahs (2006), Show your Bones
The sophomore effort from the hipster trio of Williamsburgh and now Silver Lake is a gem. They brought along the acoustic guitar and Karen O got damn catchy in her melodies even venturing into lullaby territory on "Dudly". There is still some anguish in the lyrics but nothing to compare with "Maps" on Fever to tell. The big hit, "Gold Lion" Karen turns into Siouxie Sioux with harrowing wails. On "Phenomena" the bad gets down right dirty, sounding like a stripper's bump and grind, hypnotizing and sexual. This album is the album that sees the band mature from their previous and that's always important for a band that sticks around.

9. Gorillaz (2005), Demon Days
Eclectic, danceable and chillable. The cartoon band, The Gorillaz second album takes the elements that made the first album enjoyable and make them gel more cohesively. Hypnotic, melodic and weird are more adjectives to describe the music and while, the ubiquitous "Feel Good In." has a catchy bass line, "DARE" resurrected Sean Ryder from debris of 90s Manchester and stuck his fat head in a video for, Noodle to dance around. The songs found on the Demon Days are surreal dreams put to music, keyboard and beat heavy, Dennis Hopper even lends narration to "Fire Coming Oot Of The Monkey's Head." If there is one album to get high to this decade this is the one.

10. Felt Mountain (2000), Goldfrapp
Goldfrapp's dark, moody masterpiece is not something you'll find yourself walking away from with a smile, even the Goth kids get the shivers when they hear her coo over music that seems from another era, one that never existed. There's circus odd circus notes on "Oompa Radar" that in it's place could send a person on the edge right over. The chilling violins on "Human" that make the listener dread what's about to happen to our siren but when the song breaks out into a samba beat it still seems very dangerous.
This is a trippy, trippy album that needs to be listened to from start to finish; it is a complete work of art not just a collection of songs. The lyrics are somber to fearful almost in that torch song way that can be reminiscent of Portishead if Portishead didn't use beats. Strings, organ, whistling, keyboard whines and odd percussion range from seeping and dramatic to small warnings.
