Let's Rock! At Least at first we will before we settle down into some other elements of pop music. Enjoy the sounds at you leisure. These songs flow pretty well even if it doesn't seem like it. All the songs are available for purchase on iTunes but as per usual my attempt to be awesome and tech savy by creating a link have failed so happy hunting.

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 14

That's right I'm putting forth a bonus mix because these Mixes seem week and uninspired. Maybe I'm wrong and I just can't recall why the mix was so awesome at the time. I think the real issue with this mix is the lack of current music on it for the time I made it; it sounds more like a weird rehash without any real cohesion. The songs aren't bad but . . . I don't know, I've done better. I think I hit a low point in my consumption of music and was getting into songs looked over from before. These mixes may stay this way for a while but we shall see . . . There will be another Mix on Thursday! I dunno the songs are good but the flow . . . she is weird.

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 11

This weeks mix has got some sweeping songs, some anthem caliber songs if you will. This mix has the capacity to be the greatest mix ever buut it's not; it's sort of like the Yankees of mix tapes every song is an all star (a side from Post Card Blues, Free and Veda Very Shining). I would say some of these songs shouldn't be together on a mix because they are so powerful they could destroy one another. Lets examine and enjoy shall we?

Ladies and gentlemen, Joan Jett in all her early 80s awesomeness, fresh from the Runaway's crash site Joan rocked and set the style for hipster chicks in the early 21st century.
2. Veda very Shining by Letters To Cleo
Once Letters To Cleo was one of my favorite bands and a group I thought to be vastly underrated; I never listen to them anymore.
3. Home by Iggy Pop
Slash and Duff make this song rock the balls!
4. Monkey Man by The Rolling Stones
What can I say this song just gets better and better..
5. Add It Up by Violent Femmes

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 10

This is the weekly mix and it's a weird one. There are some good songs off bad albums such as "Warped", "Ty Cobb" and Undercover of the Night". The Mix has classic rock from AC/DC, The Who and Cheap Trick and some Manchester punch from Oasis and the Stone Roses. The songs you don't know on here are G.L.O.B. and maybe U2's Mofo but the latter is U2 so it's more well known than it has any right to. I don't know what the mix is about but The Rolling Stones to the Stone Roses to Oasis row meant something I think.

The rest of One Hot Minute was garbage but this some good shit.
2. Ty Cobb by Soundgarden
This is a strange song. It is great to listen to at the gym however or when you're beating up somebody.
3. Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap by AC/DC
I love me early some AC/DC. Bon Scott AC is just a little more filth covered, a little more illicit sounding. HIGH VOLTAGE!
4. Undercover of the Night by The Rolling Stones
Possible a horrible 80s Rolling Stones song but I really enjoy it. To me it's the lost good one.
5. Begging You by The Stone Roses
From the much maligned, Second Coming this was one of the stand outs of the album.
6. Supersonic by Oasis
I didn't get into their first album until I really got into their second. Supersonic is plodding but it's so good.
7. New by No Doubt
No Doubt were trying to separate themselves from the ska that made them rich and it resulted in some good little pop, rock songs. I don't recall anybody really being into them until they put out, Rock Steady a couple years later.
8. The Needle And The Damage Done by Neil Young
Stay off heroin kids
9. Magic bus by The Who
but weed and LSD are fine. When I was a kid I thought this was a kids song, i thought it was funny but then I aged and I realized what drugs were.
10.Cursed Female by Porno For Pyros
 I can never decide how I feel about this Perry Ferrel band. Were they good or just sort of okay? I like this one as it's sort of hypnotic and the subject matter is weird. A woman who dress like a man to have sex with men, is that right?
11.Paranoid by Black Sabbath
You will rock and you will bow to sabbath!
12. Peace Dog by The Cult
More rock off the American rock inspired, Electric.
13. Hard To Handle by The Black Crows
Great job covering Otis Redding.
14.I get Around by The Beach Boys
Something was changing with these guys, maybe it was drugs, maybe it was mental instability by Bryan Wilson.
15.Electric Barbarella by Duran Duran
I am a big fan of this mediocre era of Duran Duran. It's very slick and catchy.
16.MOFO by U2
U2 went disco, it was supposed to be clever but clever doesn't sell records. I think they knew they were in a shitty age of music and were trying to do something about it.
17. Super Nova by Liz Phair
I like to pretend she sang this song to me
18.G.L.O.B. by The 360's
One of my favorite Boston bands. The 360's rocked real awesome like but could never make it to the national stage.
19. Call Me by Blondie
A song about a gigolo. This was the theme to, American Gigolo. It's a rocker regardless what it's origin.  
20 I Want You To Want Me by Cheap Trick
At some point in one's classic rock education this song becomes important as you realize the power of the concert. Live at the Budokan!

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 9

There is a lot of energy on this bad boy including some very danceable Destiny's Child and Ian Brown the singer of the Stone Roses going solo. Please welcome Mötley Crüe to the world of mixes. This mix will get your blood going fast and can make teenagers angry. Enjoy!

1. Bad Reputation by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
I adore this song, it is so full of young attitude and cool. Joan Jett had bigger hits but this one remains my favorite. I always want to give people the finger when I hear it. Another thing, I don't think she's aged a day.

2. Too Fast For Love by Mötley Crüe
Before they were fat, rich and undead the Crüe were a tough bunch of assholes who could barely make it on stage. Too Fast For Love I believe was their first single and though it was never a hit it was damn good! Reminds me of the girls i would chase when I was sixteen.
3. Good Vibrations by The Beach Boys
Theremin! This song is great and if you don't feel the power you can have your Little Deuce Coup and leave! 
4. Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen
One of the greatest, most epic rock songs ever! Over the the top in every way, Queen set the bar with this classic. When the guitars kick in it is irresistible, you must bob your head!
5. Going To California by Led Zeppelin
I kind of want to cry every time I hear this song song as it reminds me of the optimism I felt when I moved to California but also has a heartbreak in it that reminds me my own lost dreams.
6. Let's Get It On by Marvin Gaye
Sexiest song ever? I don't know for sure but it is great soulful stuff. Rest In Peace Marvin

7. Jumpin' Jumpin' by Destiny's Child
This was a hot jam when I made this mix way back in the day. Before Beoncé was the mega star she is now she was part of the girl group.
8. The Real Slim Shady by Eminem
 This is when Marshal Mathers blew up! He was that obnoxious, bleach blond, white rapper until this song dropped. Then he was enormous.
9. Heart of Glass by Blondie
From one blonde to another. From punk to disco the New York band were the coolest of the cool and one of the most accessible acts of the era. The hot lead singer didn't hurt either.

 
10.Girls & Boys by Blur
From one band that started as pop that went disco to another. Girls & and Boys is a funny, groovy dance song about Brits on hedonistic holiday.
11.You Really Got Me by Van Halen
The original Kins version was a rocker, the Van Halen version was insane! Anybody who's loved guitars has loved this song.
12.Remedy by The Black Crows
This is the song that made feel that the Black Crows weren't total wankers. It's sexy, rough and soulful Southern rock from the early 1990s
13. Whatever by Godsmack
This song gets worse with age. It's sort of a funky Nu Metal but it really isn't.
14. Natural Blues by Moby
Moby made all his money from the album, Play.  He made a lot of cash selling the rights to his songs to big companies to use in their commercials which he claims he used the pay check to give to organizations that fought against those big companies.
15. Love Like A Fountain (U.S. Version) by Ian Brown
The singer of the Stone Roses got some phat beats and grooves for this album. I find this song was the best effort from, Golden Greats.
16. Big Time Sensuality by Björk
Big time! Bjork needed us to know that she liked to dance and had some inkling to be a disco diva at the time. Now she barely makes what can be called music. I miss the old Björk.

17.London Calling by The Clash
Anger and fury on how shitty 1970s England was. Militaristic in sound this song was like a call to arms to get aware of the shite around us.
18.Here Comes Your Man by Pixies
Kind of a classic, kind of a simple little pop song but for whatever reason this was the beginning of a sea change in the perception of what was cool in music.
19.Gotta Stop by The Lemonheads
Short and sweet punk. Good way to end the mix.

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 7

This is the latest in the Mix tape chapter. What can I say about this one? Life Is Sweet and White Riot both have sirens. Stop the Rock and I Try are two songs I never listen to anymore. She Sells Sanctuary is the Cult's best song. Oasis and The Beatles can go together so seamlessly it's embarrassing. Even though there are lots of hits and well known songs here I think this was a throw away mix for me, I would strip this one down and use the songs in future mixes if I things worked that way.
Just a reminder These Mixes all fit on an 80 minute CD.

1. I Try by Macy Gray

I'm not against soul and R&B. This doesn't prove anything because it was a huge pop hit. Macy was supposed to be the next big thing and while she was around for a few years she fell off the face of the charts after a couple albums.

2. She Sells Sanctuary by The Cult

Not much "alternative" music rocked like this back in the mid 80s. This is one f the all time greats of the era and genre. The psychedelic beginning that gives way to straight ahead rock is gorgeous; it seems to get better with age.

3. Gallows Pole by Led Zeppelin

This song grew on me as a lad and now I thoroughly enjoy the boys idea of American bluegrass and folk. It's one of the two poles I stay away from

4. Fashion by David Bowie

On the other end of things is Bowie. Who doesn't like Bowie? 

5. Life is Sweet by The Chemical Brothers

With help from Charlatans lead singer Tim Burgess, The Chemical brothers put out one of their best tracks. The Exit Planet Dust album was a huge change in my music appreciation. When I heard it I wanted to nothing but groove out and got to raves.

6. White Riot by The Clash

They were the only band that mattered

7. Drain You/Aneurysm (live) By Nirvana
Typically I stay away from using the same artist back to back but these two live versions are so killer together I had to do it!
9. I Am The Bullgod by Kid Rock
 He was kind of a badass back then or at least he fronted like he was. This song is great for feeling full of testosterone.
10.Another One Bites The Dust by Queen
One of the most famous bass lines in rock. One of the greatest bands ever with possibly the greatest front man of all time. We miss you Freddy.

Time to boogie!
12.Pump Up The Volume by M/A/R/R/S
This dance track changed my view on what type of music I listened. I heard it my freshman year of high school when I was defining myself as a rocker. Maybe if I was more obsessive I would have become a DJ after hearing this or started some weird teenage boy dance club.
13.Stop the Rock by Apollo 440
This dance number was British but it's sort of stupid and jock like now.
14.Don't Look Back In Anger by Oasis
Noel Gallagher sang this track which was off the bands monstrously huge sophomore album, What's the Story Morning Glory album. Song after song after song was so enjoyable I didn't know if I was an idiot or not.

15. All You Need Is Love by The Beatles
Is this my favorite Beatles song? That's one of those questions that varies from week to week but for the sake of argument we will say yes.
16.Put Your Lights On by Santana
I am not a Santana fan, I am not an Everlast fan but these guys made a song that was one of my favorites of 1999. This is from that Santana album Supernatural that won like eight Grammys
17.Ex-Girlfriend by No Doubt
Back when Gwen had a band and wasn't some horrible pop product.
18.In Between Days by The Cure
When you talk about great bands, you must talk about the Cure. They aren't the sort of band that's in vogue but without them there's a lot that doesn't follow. This was the first Cure song I ever heard and when I did I thought it made me weird rather than cool. I should have just enjoyed it and gave the finger to everybody else.

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 5

There are more awesome tunes on this mix than you should be able to handle so listen with caution. We have many huge hits like "Sweet Emotion", The Beautiful People" and Wonderwall. and a couple lesser known gems like Morphine's "The Night" which was written just before singer and bassist Mark Sandman passed away on to the eternal B-side. Also Izzy Stradlin showing why he was so important to G'n'R with the frantic "Double talin' Jive"
In addition this mix has one of top 5 favorite love songs of all time, "Everlong"; I'll disclose the others at some point. Speaking of Top Fives, "Bedtime Story" is one of my top Five favorite Madonna songs, did you know that?
Lastly I think this ends the Buzzcocks appearances on my mixes.

1. 20th Century Boy by T. Rex
Sometimes I think T. Rex is the coolest band ever but then I listen to their songs and I feel I've been duped. This is one of Marc Bolan and the boys better efforts. It's cool. 

2. Ever Fallen In Love by The Buzzcocks
Is this their best song or is it Orgasm Addict? So many bands have taken what the Buzzcocks did in the late 70s and made much more money than they ever did. Green Day
3. Sweet Emotion by Aerosmith
There are good songs, there are great songs and then there are songs that take on a life of their own, transcending everything, this is one of them.

 
4. Swallowed by Bush
I was never a huge Bush fan as they were just a grunge clone but I really liked this first single from their second album, Razorblade Suitcase.
5. The Night by Morphine
Posthumously released music is always eerie and often sad, this song is no different. A cool Boston band with a singer who once got stabbed in the chest while driving his cab but he didn't die then.
6. I'm A man by The Spencer Davis Group
Groovy British teenagers singing about being a man, brilliant.
7. Everlong by Foo Fighters
One of my ten favorite love songs . . . EVER!
8. Territorial Pissings by Nirvana
When people say Nirvana was punk I guess this is what they were talking about.
9. Rabbit by Lemonheads
Catchy punk songs about wanting to shag. Awesome!
10.Egg Man by The Beastie Boys
This is the rap reworking of their old ass song, Egg Raid on Mojo. It's on the album, Paul's Boutique which critics have a major chubby for but didn't sell as well as License To Ill.
11.You Should Be Dancing by Bee Gees
You want to know about disco? This is a good place to start. It's not as goofball as some of the genre but it definitely fits. 

 
12.Push It by Garbage
"Make the beats go harder" Shirley sounds great on this track. Once Garbage was a band that mattered but then they began to suck it.
13.Natural One by Folk Implosion
Creepiness comes in all forms including this song off The Kids soundtrack.
14.Sleep Now In The Fire by Rage Against The Machine
Maybe they stopped being the only band that mattered by this point but it was the my favorite song off, The Battle for Los Angeles
15.Just by Radiohead

16.Wonderwall by Oasis
Greatness of pop is right here.
17. She Bangs The Drum by Stone Roses
NME said The Stone Roses debut album was the best album ever, maybe they exaggerate but it is a beautiful collection of songs.

I'm sure if I was in my twenties in the sixties I would have hated these guys but seeing as I wasn't even born then so I guess that's why I like them.
19.Double Talkin' Jive by Guns N' Roses
Izzy Stradlin' sang this one about the bands early days.
20.Bedtime Story by Madonna
Björk wrote this, can't you tell?

 
21.The Beautiful People by Marilyn Manson
This is the song that put him over the top and not just a one hit wonder with a cover as his most known song. Industrial and crazy Marilyn Manson sings about being angry even though it's not real, nothing he did was.

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 2

Your weekly play list. I don't need to explain myself and the reality of the play list is that the songs sound good together in this particular order. If you're an iTunes type of person I will warn you that not all these titles can be found there, the first song is the perfect example.
Note on this mix: Many of these songs on here are songs that I didn't like when I first heard them, strange. Many seem to have a rock fusion whether it's rock and rap or rock and techno.

1. Tomorrow Never Knows by The Beatles
I think Noel Gallagher says this is his favorite Beatles song and lets be fair it's a very good song that highly influenced the final song on the mix
2. Bawitdaba by Kid Rock
I like to rock! It was clear at some point in Kid Rock's weird musical career he did too but besides his name it seems like all rap and country hybrid music. I don't know what I'm saying really but I like this jam. It came out when it seemed even rockers were still shying away from being flamboyant and over the top, to me he said he was going for it.

3. Give It Away by Red hot Chili Peppers
Non stop funk machines? Well not quite, they have definitely stopped being funky and this may have actually been the last time they tried. Blood Sugar Sex Magik in many ways made The Chili Peppers a worse band, fame can do that.
4. Don't Bring Me Down By Electric Light Orchestra
Jeff Lynn, producer of the late 80s and rocker of the 70s. A man with an afro and that's the end of what I got to say besides this song is a really good pop song. 
5. Nookie by Limp Bizkit
When rap and metal collide you get better examples such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers and you get worse ones like Limp Bizkit. they filled the void for those about to rock but couldn't quite get there.
6. Dazzle by Siouxsie & the Banshees
Ahhh, this song is beautiful and gorgeous and utterly goth pop! Souixsie was at her best here before she started to dance a bit too much.

7. Firestarter by The Prodigy
The Prodigy were supposed to be the band that combined techno and rock and take us into the new millennium; it didn't quite work out that way even though they were all over the radio and Mtv. Fat of The Land wasn't a bad album but it was already too late for awesome rock movements. Yes it symbolized getting as far away from Grunge as we could and attempt to get that dirty shotgun barrel taste out of our mouths but it left us wondering what the hell?

8. She's a Rainbow by The Rolling Stones
BAck in the 60s all the big bands gave psychedelia a try, here's one of the Stones better known efforts as well as background music for the iMac when it went into many colors.
9. Baby Did A Bad Bad thing by Chris Isaak
Only Chris Isaak and Prince could pull off a purple suit like he did in his video. I don't know how this song made it into a Stanley Kubrick movie; it may be proof that he really didn't finish it before he passed away.
10. Can't Get Enough Of You Baby by Smash Mouth
Party Music for the last part of the 90s!
11. I'm The One by Van Halen
Party Music for those who weren't into disco in the late 70s
12. Walk On The Wild side by Lou Reed
So we're going to cool it down a bit, we're going to see New York City through Lou Reed's eyes. I wonder if kids feel this song carries any weight any more.

13. Stuck In The Middle With You by Steelers Wheel

14. Walk This Way by Aerosmith
Aerosmith and Rick Rubin will claim this was the first rap song but obviously that's just hype. The song was great no matter what it is. I still think Toys In The Attic is a great album.
15. Belt by Lemonheads
If one bostan band is good, two are better
16. Wave Of Mutilation (UK Surf) by Pixies
And three is beautiful. This slowed down version of the song is great and trippy and sad

17. Rusty Cage by Soundgarden
Picking up the pace again we go to the Pacific Northwest to hear what Soundgarden did on the album that built them a big following before they got humungous! Some will say because the sales weren't as good there was no way the Badmotorfinger album wasn't as good as Superunkown but they would be posers.
18. Bring Tha Noize by Public Enemy and Anthrax
Metal and Rap fusing again! What's going on? I enjoy this version more than the Public Enemy version without Anthrax.
19. Setting Sun by The Chemical Brothers
It all comes around, doesn't it? Techno and rock together at last! This is the Chemical Brother's best song and might be the only one anybody besides real fans can name. The video was crazy if i recall with a girl having a bad trip . . . Dig Your Own Hole

 

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 1

So obviously I am a huge music fan/geek and with that it is without a doubt I love creating mix tapes; I've been doing it since the 80s! So what I'm gonna start doing is suggesting a weekly mix based off the CD's I started making over a decade ago which will explain why there's nothing too recent. You might find the songs ridiculous or you might find them awesome, who knows. Anyway give it a go or just let me know what you think. Each of these mixes will indeed fit on an 80 minute CD. I would love just to give you the music but that could get hairy.




1. Goin' Out West by Tom Waits
This is definitely in my top five tom Waits songs; it's not very representative of his work as it really rocks but then again it is off of Bone Machine

2. Fed Up by Lemonheads
Punkabilly! One of the Boston bands that people seem to always remember even though they just had the one hit with It's a Shame About Ray.
3. Tin Machine by Tine Machine
 David Bowie never rocked this hard! I'm glad he got down to it though.
4. Search & Destroy by The Stooges
Can there be Bowie without Iggy? They were linked  in so many ways back in the 70s. This song is really what punk is all about, sloppy, dirty, angry and loud!

5. Gloria by Them
Van Morrisson's band before he went solo. This song has been covered by everybody from the The Doors to Patty Smith but the original is still the best.
6. Jack-Ass by Beck
Beck gets mellow. This is off that great album Odelay
7. Five to One by The Doors
They were great and they were copied by almost everybody . . . well Jim Morrisson was. Truly one of the most dynamic,  mysterious and drunk front men of all time.
8. Kool Thing by Sonic youth
Maybe my favorite Sonic Youth songs and not because Chuck D's on it and not because it's about LL Cool J.
9. Hot Stuff by Donna Summer
Disco diva number one!
10.Horny by Mousse T.vs. Hot n' Juicy
I thought this song was great but now I find it unbearable.
11.Dangerous Type by Letters to Cleo
More Boston on Boston action. A band from Bean town covering another of the Hub's best, The Cars.
12.Rocks by Primal Scream
Primal Scream is one of those bands that critics praise as the innovators of Madchester and who am I to argue. I kept hearing this was a rolling Stones cover but the Rolling Stone's song doesn't sound like this.
13.More Than A Feeling by Boston
Because I'm from Boston I have no choice but to say I like this song even if I'm not really that fond of it.
14. Spanish Eyes by U2
This was a B side from the Joshua Tree days. You know you're good when your leftovers are better than many people's best.

15.That's The Way (I Like It) by K.C. & The Sunshine Band
Why do I disco so hard?
16.Bodies by Sex Pistols
British Punk was outrageous and these guys were at the forefront of it all!
17.Fly Away by Lenny Kravitz
Not Lenny's best but it wasn't bad, this is when he started to put his music in commercials
18.That's Entertainment by Morrissey
 Morrissey covering the Jam. he slows it down and makes it his own.
19.Starfuckers, Inc by Nine Inch Nails
When I first heard this song I couldn't believe Nine Inch Nails came through but the rest of the album The Fragile wasn't quite as awesome.
20.Plaster Caster by KISS
The biggest band in the world, at least that's what they will tel you. The merchandising kings, the biggest sellouts is what others will say. This song however is ALRIGHT!

Lastly I should also note that as I begun making mix CDs I was trying to continue from where the mix tapes left off so I didn't use any songs that I had used before but as time went on I through that idea away and used anything that hadn't been part of the CD series. The reason for this was I realized it was going to make the mixes stronger and more awesome for listening pleasure. Things I've also learned about mix tapes is they can't be rushed; they must grow organically and be fussed over until all is sound and feels complete. I've rushed a mix before and I regretted it as I had to go back a rework it which made me feel like some time traveling freak.

MIx Tape Challenge

There's a local club that sponsors a Mixtape exchange/challenge which upon my learning of this info sent me into music knowledge and organization fits. The latest theme to this exchange is Cities vs. Towns, now since I have adult responsibilities I won't be able to attend this fun get together but it doesn't mean I don't want to participate in some way. My First Mix CD

So I gave up my first Mix Tape to you and it was embarrassing but that won't stop me from sharing my first Mix Cd with you. I think it's a lot better than the tape but the reasons . . . I guess it's the whole older and wiser thing. What really matters is that I love to make a mix of songs after all these years, yeah? This mix Cd was created in 1998 a year that was well after anything intersting happened in music and before ... Eminem?, The Strokes?, Kid Rock? It's all the same to me in that era of stuff that didn't move me too much.

In actuality this mix is some of the better moments of the many tapes I put together such as "The Spy"'s segue into "The Phoenix" or "Fake Plastic Trees" into "Morning Glory". I guess "The Ocean" remains as the song that remains the same on both tape and CD.

My First Mix Tape

I recalled today as I walked around and listened to my little iPod shuffle the point in my life I would like every other kid make mix tapes. some were iffy while others are classics of the genre. yes, classics because friends used to ask me to make them mixes after hearing mine . . . I should have been a DJ, right?
Anyway, after much digging I found my first mix tape that I created on August 1st 1987 just a month before I started High School and less than 6 months before I discovered Gins n' Roses

There are a couple songs here that I still listen to but most of them are pieces that I'd leave off of any list at this point in my music listening life. I think I still have about 20 or so of these tapes in a nice carrying case from years ago; where was I bringing these tapes?
