Weekly Mix # 56

Am I clever? No. But I did manage to put Me, Mr. & Mrs. Jones all in the same mix; it's trouble especially because "me" in this case is two different people, A skinny junky girl from England and a middle aged black man from Philadelphia. Both got great pipes and got soul but I think that's it. This was good mix for 2007, not the best but good. Several good 00s bands represent for the a multiple time like Interpol, White Stripes and Clinic while Tim Armstrong makes his first appearance as a solo artist.
Enjoy if you can!

1. Me & Mr. Jones by Amy Winehouse
"What kind of fuckery is this?" Only Amy will know
2. She Builds Quick Machines by Velvet Revolver
This is from the sophomore effort of the supergroup of the decade; it wasn't very good but this tune is okay.
3. Sheena Is a Parasite by The Horrors
I heard this song and I was changed! This is one of 2007's best rock songs and somewhat of a reply to the Ramones' Sheena is a Punk Rocker

4.Silent Lucidity by Queensryche
Do you remember this song from 1990? I did too and I listened to this number for about a week straight when I was making this mix.
5. The Heinrich Maneuver by Interpol
They want to know how things are on the west coast and I guess they're pretty good.
6. In The jailhouse Now by The Soggy Bottom Boys
Not a real band but an awesome band from a great movie, O Brother Where art Thou?
7. Conquest by The White Stripes
This is some cover or other
8. The Ghost of You Lingers by Spoon
I'm not a fan of Spoon but this song I like
9. If You Could Read your Mind by Clinic
Sounds like spy rock
10.Crying by Roy Orbison
So sad, so very, very sad. Roy had one of the best voices
11.Your Cheatin' Heart by Hank Williams
Hank was a conflicted man and spawned two generations of music I don't care too much for.
12.Texas Radio & The Big Beat
This poem has nothing to do with dance music
13.This Is How It Feels by Inspiral Carpets
Art School kids loved this band back in the early 90s, You may know their bigger and more danceable hit, Commercial Rain
14.Abra Cadaver by The Hives
Abrasive, loud and weird: The Hives are Rock n' roll!
15.Smile by Lily Allen
She's a mean little Brit chick
16.She's So Cold by The Rolling Stones
Sometimes I just like the Stones and sometimes one relationship shot deserves another
17.Kiss, Kiss by Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Dark and Moody!
18.Friends by Led Zeppelin
Off the Led Zeppelin III album which is sort of a mess in it's cohesion
19.God Smack by Alice In Chains
Still crazy sounding after all these years
20.Just by Mark Ronson feat. Phantom Planet
This is a Radiohead cover and I think I might like it better than the original.
21.Take This City by Tim Armstrong
Front man of Rancid, Tim has put out some cool shit since.
22.Really Rich Italian Satanists by Dirty Sanchez
This song blows my mind in ways I'm never going to discuss openly
23.Me and Mrs. Jones by Billy Paul
Somber and sweet but definitely not a healthy relationship song. Bill Cosby loved this song

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 42

Sometimes I look at Mixes and I wonder what and why and if but then I realize I juts like music and I have a part of me that needs to organize things I like. Listen and enjoy.

1. When The Levee Breaks by Led Zeppelin
This was added just to pay tribute to Hurricane Katrina, the real body of the mix starts after this
2. You May Be Right by Billy Joel
Back in the late 70s and very early 80s Billy Joel was cool and even then he was getting into accidents involving motorized transportation.
3. Do You Want To by Franz Ferdinand
The first single from their second album was very well received by me. I know they were involved in some shady record label payola scams but that's entertainment.
4. Mr. Brownstone by Guns N' Roses
Yea, this song is about drugs. If you didn't know that, you don't know Diddly
5. Roadhouse Blues by The Doors
One of my all time Karaoke favorites
6. Little Ghost by The White Stripes
What can I say; it's a cheery little ditty.
7. Wax Ecstatic (To Sell Angelina) by Sponge
This is what happens when a band tries to sound like a band who sounds like another band.
8. Diamonds from Sierra Leone by Kanye West featuring Jay-Z
Years before he was called a jackass by Obama
9. Reason Is treason by Kasabian
I can't recall why I forced myself to listen to this band
10.Taste The Pain by Red Hot Chili Peppers
Definitely one of their best songs
11.Helena by My Chemical Romance
Gothic pop never made so much money, Siouxi Sioux and Peter Murphy send their regards
12.Give In by The Bravery
Boring single that is on this mix because I felt like using another moody band after My Chemical Romance
13.What's My Name by Snoop Doggy Dogg
Before he dropped the "Doggy" and back when he was supposed be a gangster.
14.Pon de Replay by Rihanna
I assumed she was going to be a one hit wonder, most Caribbean acts are, right?
15.Watching The Detectives by Elvis Costello & The Attractions
Kinda' reggae but mostly clever and British
16.Electric Avenue by Eddy Grant
He had a career in the UK before this song was plugged in her in the US; he was already 35 when this tune broke in 1983. Kinda Caribbean but mostly British wit.
17.C'mer by Interpol
New York's finest
18.Wake Up by Arcade Fire
These guys write epic songs
19.Valerie Loves Me by Material Issue
Power pop from Chicago! Their singer Jim Ellison committed suicide in1996.
20.Dirty Water by Dropkick Murphys
The best song about Boston finally covered by a Boston band. Some hip hop guy should have wrote a New Orleans rap and sampled the original.

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 39

Here is a mix that was fairly up to day when it was made in 2005. It includes one of my favorite songs from 2004 including Portions for Foxes; a dark little ditty. We explore another track from The White Stripes' Get Behind Me Satan  album which almost seems like classic rock at this point.

Enjoy!

1. Bullet With Butterfly Wings by Smashing Pumpkins
"The world is a Vampire", Billy Corgan didn't have his coffee that morning or so I'm guessing but then again he's diva
2. Black Tambourine by Beck
This little Scientologist jam kind of makes me want to dance
3. I Hate the Way you Love by The Kills
All their songs sound the same
4. 99 Problems by Danger Mouse feat. Jay-Z
From the infamous Grey Album. The Beatles got mashed up with Jay-Z; it so good.
5. Portions for Foxes by Rilo Kiley
Sung by former child actor Jenny Lewis, this is a song about being lonely and having an empty soul
6. Take, Take, Take by The White Stripes
Obsession is bad, bad, bad thing
7. Mother Mother by Tracy Bonham
A 90's one hit wonder, the former Berklee College of Music student goes pop rock. It's a good song about being on your own for the first time.
8. Vertigo by The Libertines
America had The Stroke and England had The Libertines
9. Crispin Glover by Scarling
L.A.'s own little goth pop band. I saw them live in 2005 and they played really well.
10.NYC by Interpol
New York City's own Joy Division  that has a bassist that looks like Crispin glover . . . do you get the progression?
11.Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division
If it's not love it's impending fame
12.Misty Mountain Hop by Led Zeppelin
Classic rock that is supposedly about a walk in the park. I love the organ in the beginning, it sounds like jet travel.
13.Freedom Fighters by The Music
A random song that I assume was bigger in the UK than here.
14.The Rooster by Outkast
This is a hot jam from the Speaker Box and The Love Below
15.No One Knows by Queens of the Stone Age
The ever changing line up of QotSA makes me wonder a lot about the band.
16.I Hope, I Think, I know by Oasis
This was an overlooked gem on Oasis's highly anticipated album, Be Here Now.  The album was overripe and self indulgent but this song is short and simple. They even reference Wonderwall.
17.Sometimes Always by The Jesus & Mary Chain
Alternative rock started to put out duets in 1994 a sure sign of a genre's demise. Hope Sandoval from MAzzy Star lends her sweet lazy vocals to this tune
18.Rodeohead by Hard 'N Firm
Chris Hardwick of Singled Out and Web Soup was in this odd little band and made a very good Radiohead medley, country blue grass style.
19. Crawl Straight Home by HorrorPops
Rockabilly done modern
20.Goodbye Stranger by Supertramp
I used to get Heart and Supertramp mixed up when I was a little kid; i think I thought the singer was a woman. A song about love on the road, real problems that none of us have to deal with.

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 33

This one is okay but not great or maybe it's awesome, who knows? Good moments, Make It Clap transitioning into Illegal Tender as it starts with clapping . . . so clever. When I did this mix I was obsessed with Evil by Interpol; it was the only song I was listening to all the time; I think I wore it out.

1. Beware by Rockcity Mourge
Good 70s rock from a 00s band
2. Cold Hard Bitch by JET
I hate this song, I've never liked this song so think of this as filler unless you like this song then I guess you're psyched.
3. Tumbling Dice by The Rolling Stones
I didn't like this song until 2006 and then I loved it, maybe I finally got it, maybe I associate it with something awesome . . . I'm not sure.
4. Little Sister by Queens Of The Stone Age
I think this band is okay but I don't know why, I think this song is from Palm Springs
5. My Mother The War by 10,000 Maniacs
Before the hits and before your mom liked them . . .grandmother maybe?
6. Evil by Interpol
Suddenly Interpol was the best band ever, well not really but I couldn't get enough of this song; I wish I saw them live
7. Make It Clap by Busta Rhymes
IS this song about venereal disease?
8. Illegal Tender by Louis XIV
For those who love hand clapping
9. The Way You Move by Big Boi
This was the other song from Oukast's last album
10.In Da Club by 50 Cent
There's something irresistible about this tune; I can't place it. Maybe I associate it with something awesome.

Flock of Seagulls

11.I Ran (So Far Away) by A Flock of Seagulls
This is New Wave. If anybody asks play them this song
12.Fox On The Run by Sweet
Glam Rock from the 70s; I wish I was a teenager when this song was a hit. I think it would have been awesome.
13.Rock of Ages by Def Leppard
A very famous beginning. Sometimes I live this rocker and other times it makes me feel dumb.
14.Sucker Train Blues by Velvet Revolver
Continuing with the rock, lets listen to this Super group's offering
15.Breaking The Law (live) by Judas Priest
Let's break the law! This song rings true for those feeling the economic crunch
16.Club Foot by Kasabian
This is a song that I don't like but like all at once, why not?
17.Institutionalized by Suicidal Tendencies
This is a teenage anthem! Satisfaction, Fight For your Right To Party, My generation . . . all for the meek. It's punk but different. I believe they were all in the crypts which made it illegal for them to play live in Los Angeles for a while.
18.Hypersonic by Jane's Addiction
It's just not the same as used to be . . . so sad.
19.Come Away With Me by Nora Jones
She sings this song so sultry that I totally want to go away with her and that's why she won the Grammy.
20.Galvanize by The Chemical Brothers
"My finger is on the button" This song is huge in sound and gives me chills sometimes
21.Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me by U2
From the Batman and Robin movie; this was the best thing about it.

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 31

This a strange mix but I like it; it doesn't veer too far in any direction and stays the course of solid. I think I made this mix in early 2005.
enjoy

1. 100% by Sonic Youth
Two minutes and thirty seconds of beautiful noise
2. Dirty Little Thing by Velvet Revolver
Scott Weiland really does his thing on this track; I can see him singing this when his voice comes on
3. Hollywood Nights by Bob Seger
That galloping beat, the story, the emoting all make Mr. Seger deserve more modern props
4. Candy Everybody Wants by 10,000 Maniacs
College music goes mainstream; is this a happy song?
5. Pain by Jimmy Eat World
Jimmy Eat World would have been bigger in the 80s as they don't fit our modern ideas of needing to categorize rock bands into sub genres
6. Black Heart by Calexico
Depressing . . .
7. Vertigo by U2
The last good U2 song
8. Ace Of Spades by Motörhead
This is one of the greatest hard rock songs ever and somehow I didn't hear it's first 24 years of public availability.
9. Megalomaniac by Incubus
This is the only Incubus song I can tolerate
10.Magic by Olivia Newton-John
She's straight about it, "We have to believe we are magic, nothing can stand in our way."Olivia's vocals were so seductive on this track I was ready to believe her, roller skates and all
11.Brain Stew by Green Day
I thought for a while this would be Green Day's last song of note but then that American Idiot thing showed up.
12.Callin' Out by Lyrics Born
East Bay style rap; is it better than the Humpty Dance?
13.Fit but You Know It by The Streets
Listen and follow the story; it's funny
14.The Widow by The Mars Volta
Overrated band
15.Slow Hands by Interpol
Sounding like Joy Division and on the top of their game
16.An Honest Mistake by The Bravery
Sounding like New Order and on the top of their game
17.People Who Died by Jim Carroll
Death is funny when it rhymes. R.I.P. Jim
18.The Rat by The Walkmen
For me there was only this song by These guys and then they exploded
19.Maps by Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Ladies and gentlemen, Yeah Yeah Yeahs. This is a great song to put on a Mix CD when you're moving away from your loved one or the other way around
20.Rock You Like A Hurricane by Scorpions
EPIC metal from the 80s; if their is one song you need in your collection by these Germans, this is it.

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 28

This is mix that I like, there's a synth portion of this one that is super sexy. That portion starts at the danceable silliness of Starry Eyed Surprise and travels through an 80s futuristic fantasy of Emerge. Some big songs come through here with Seven Nation Army, Crazy In Love, Do You Realize.

1. All My Life by Foo Fighters
Bringing their Rock Back after a little while of sucking ass. This is definitely my second favorite Foo Fighter's song after Everlong.
2. This Fire by Franz Ferdinand
Introducing Franz Ferdinand, Welsh or Scottish, it don't matter
3. Starry Eyed Surprise by Paul Oakenfold
The singer from Crazy Town lends his mediocre vocals to this piece
4. Cars by Gary Newman
So Detached, so robotic and sexy
5. Can't Get you Out Of My head by Kylie Minogue
So Detached, so robotic and sexy
6. (Keep Feeling) Fascination by Human League
Another song that takes us to androgynous keyboard happiness
7. Emerge by Fischerspooner
Paying tribute to techno and performance art
8. Crazy In Love by Beyoncé Feat. Jay-Z
The world hasn't recovered from this song yet
9. Seven Nation Army by White Stripes
Such a simple song, so powerful but that's the blues, right?
10.Slither by Velvet Revolver
Hello modern rock. Weiland, Slash, Duff and Matt Sorum get their big guns out and rock for one of 2004's best songs
11.Caught By The Fuzz by Supergrass
Revisiting a Britpop band that isn't Blur or Oasis.
12.Big Brat by Phantom Planet
I think this is their only good song
13.Do You Realize?? by The Flaming Lips
Sometimes this song can make me shed a tear and sometimes it annoys
14.Roll Out (My Business) by Ludacris
Luda brings his huge head and unique rap style to the world via Atlanta
15.PDA by Interpol
Let's all welcome one of New York City's best bands of the past decade
16.River Deep - Mountain High by Tina Turner
Good God this song is balls out awesome. Phil Spector doing his thing on production
17.Smooth Up In Ya by Bulletboys
One of the 80s best examples of L.A. metal that didn't totally suck ass.
18.The Man Comes Around by Johnny Cash
Revelations, my friends, Revelations. This song was used in a Zombie movie, Day of the Dead I think
19.Fuel My Fire by The Prodigy
Who would have thunk L7 would get covered by a British techno band.
