Weekly Mix #79

Oh Boy! 2011 is here for the mixes which means there aren't very many to go. Much of this mix was made after one of the best weeks in music release memory where it seemed like everything good came out!

1. In a Big Country  by Big Country
Bagpipes! 80s rock! It didn't get any bigger for these Scottish dudes. The singer killed himself a few years back from what I hear.

2. Under Cover of Darkness by The Strokes
The Strokes are back!!! In my mix world they've been around forever but in the real world this was the first album in years and the single is delightfully Strokestacular!
3. Breaker, Breaker by Peter, Bjorn and John
This is the best thing the boys of PB&J have done since they blessed us with the ubiquitous ,Young Folks. Worth the wait, maybe.
4. 1,000,000 by R.E.M.
Their first single ever which nobody heard outside of Atlanta for years, you gotta love that 1980s indie rock!
5. Sing by My Chemical Romance
They got lots of play from this song, especially on some add for some TV show.
6. Being Followed by Duran Duran
I love it, I love their come back album!
7. Everybody Have Fun Tonight by Wang Chung
Stupid but fun. Wang Chung will make another appearance with us in the not too distant future.
8. Twenty Yards behind by Dr. Feelgood
Ska! Ska! Ska!
9. Let England Shake by PJ Harvy
It has been a long time between PJ Harvy listens for me but I'm glad I listened to this new song.
10.S and M by Rihanna
Club Music!
11.Communication by The Power Station
This was their third single and it was damn catchy for dorks like me.

12.Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away) by Mötley Crüe
Better words have rarely been spoken
13.Guilty Girls by BuffaloTom
Back from the dead, Buffalo Tom get really catchy and good!
14.Kiss Me On The Bus by The Replacements
Feel good indie rock 1985 style! For me R.E.M and The Matts will always be linked by that college radio of the 80s thing

15.Silver Lining by Rilo Kiley
they'll never get better than Portions for Foxes but they will make some decent tunes.
16.U Should Know Better by Robyn & Snoop Dogg
weird duo but it works and it works well in the Euro disco way
17.Wrong by Depeche Mode
Not a good song to listen to in the middle of the night even though I can't think of any other time I'd want to hear it.
18.Thrones by The Dears
Canadian Rock's best band currently. Arcade Fire and eat a dick straight up.
19.The Crystal Ship by The Doors
Crooning must continue. What is the Crystal Ship anyway?
20.Miss Misery by Elliott Smith
This song would make me kill myself too. This song should have won the Oscar for best song from a motion picture but Celine Dion got it with, My Heart Will Go On, lame. Honestly when you compare the two performances Celine should be embarrassed.

21.Hush by Kula Shaker
It's almost the same as Deep Purple's but is it better than when Charlatans UK did it in the late 80s?
22.Bad Medicine by Bon Jovi
More organ? Let's end on a high rocker!

Listen to it here!

Weekly Mix # 58

Here's where we get our first glimpse of 2008. Sorry this was late.

1. Runnin' With the Devil by Van Halen
OH YEAH! You know this is really just a blues song that was transformed into awesome!
2. The Kelly Affair by Be Your Own Pet
One album and then they broke up, probably for the best
3. Tom Sawyer by Rush
I don't like Rush and I don't think I ever will. This song however is just barely on the tolerable scale.
4. Time To Pretend by MGMT
I don't get why this band was so loved and haled as brilliant. They must know the critics.
5. You're Gonna' Miss Me by The 13th Floor Elevators
Roky Erickson's band. Like most people I didn't hear this song until I saw High Fidelity.
6. Be My baby by The Ronnettes
Some people love this song because it was in Dirty Dancing; I just like the Phil Spector Wall of Sound production and the big hair.
7. Rehab by Amy Winehouse
Huge song! This won her Grammy's and made her millions of dollars. It is a throw back to do-wop and Motown and The Ronnettes big hair but has Mark Ronson production
8. Talk Dirty To Me by Poison
Oh No! Before Brett Michaels embarrassed himself as a "reality" personality he embarrassed himself in his band Poison by making pop rock under the guise of metal.
9. Into Action by Tim Armstrong
The man from Rancid; he knows how to make a good time summer album. The girl who sings with him on this was thirteen years old.
10.This Is The Day by The The
You may know this song from an M & M's commercial. It's actually a pretty sad song.
11.It's My Fault for being Famous by The White Stripes
B-sides are a lost entity because nobody knows what that means anymore. Now it's just a bonus track. Anyway this is a funny song about being stalked by the press and fans.
12.Eat Yourself by Goldfrapp
She returns to her Felt Mountain after being disco for some years.
13.Sundown by Gorden Lightfoot
Just a groovy 70s singer songwriter. This was on heavy repeat for a while back in 08'
14.Boston by Augustana
Great sweeping pop song that only got my attention because of the city.
15.Well All Right by The Hives
We get hand clapping in this one and that's awesome.
16.The Moneymaker by Rilo Kiley
This song is nowhere near as crazy as, Portions For Foxes but it's still pretty mean.
17.Umbrella by Rihanna feat. Jay-Z
This song made Rihanna huge and there was no going back much to Chris Brown's chagrin.
18.Tennagers by My Chemical Romance
Many people think this is MCR's best song, I don't but I do think it's a good one. The video owes a lot to Smells Like Teen Spirit, I suppose it's an homage
19.1979 by The Smashing Pumpkins
It's a little song and it's cute; it was also a big hit for them. I heard that Billy Corgan had to completely recompose the music right before they recorded it.
20.Lazy Eye by Silversun Pickups
When the Smashing pumpkins couldn't be Smashing Pumpkins, The Silversun Pickups could be.
21.The End Of The Line by The Traveling Wilburys
The late 80s super group containing Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and produced by Jeff Lynn made a lot of money off this project.

Weekly Mix Tape Pt 39

Here is a mix that was fairly up to day when it was made in 2005. It includes one of my favorite songs from 2004 including Portions for Foxes; a dark little ditty. We explore another track from The White Stripes' Get Behind Me Satan  album which almost seems like classic rock at this point.

Enjoy!

1. Bullet With Butterfly Wings by Smashing Pumpkins
"The world is a Vampire", Billy Corgan didn't have his coffee that morning or so I'm guessing but then again he's diva
2. Black Tambourine by Beck
This little Scientologist jam kind of makes me want to dance
3. I Hate the Way you Love by The Kills
All their songs sound the same
4. 99 Problems by Danger Mouse feat. Jay-Z
From the infamous Grey Album. The Beatles got mashed up with Jay-Z; it so good.
5. Portions for Foxes by Rilo Kiley
Sung by former child actor Jenny Lewis, this is a song about being lonely and having an empty soul
6. Take, Take, Take by The White Stripes
Obsession is bad, bad, bad thing
7. Mother Mother by Tracy Bonham
A 90's one hit wonder, the former Berklee College of Music student goes pop rock. It's a good song about being on your own for the first time.
8. Vertigo by The Libertines
America had The Stroke and England had The Libertines
9. Crispin Glover by Scarling
L.A.'s own little goth pop band. I saw them live in 2005 and they played really well.
10.NYC by Interpol
New York City's own Joy Division  that has a bassist that looks like Crispin glover . . . do you get the progression?
11.Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division
If it's not love it's impending fame
12.Misty Mountain Hop by Led Zeppelin
Classic rock that is supposedly about a walk in the park. I love the organ in the beginning, it sounds like jet travel.
13.Freedom Fighters by The Music
A random song that I assume was bigger in the UK than here.
14.The Rooster by Outkast
This is a hot jam from the Speaker Box and The Love Below
15.No One Knows by Queens of the Stone Age
The ever changing line up of QotSA makes me wonder a lot about the band.
16.I Hope, I Think, I know by Oasis
This was an overlooked gem on Oasis's highly anticipated album, Be Here Now.  The album was overripe and self indulgent but this song is short and simple. They even reference Wonderwall.
17.Sometimes Always by The Jesus & Mary Chain
Alternative rock started to put out duets in 1994 a sure sign of a genre's demise. Hope Sandoval from MAzzy Star lends her sweet lazy vocals to this tune
18.Rodeohead by Hard 'N Firm
Chris Hardwick of Singled Out and Web Soup was in this odd little band and made a very good Radiohead medley, country blue grass style.
19. Crawl Straight Home by HorrorPops
Rockabilly done modern
20.Goodbye Stranger by Supertramp
I used to get Heart and Supertramp mixed up when I was a little kid; i think I thought the singer was a woman. A song about love on the road, real problems that none of us have to deal with.
