So nearly ten years after planes were hijacked and flown into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon the individual who has been held accountable for planning the destruction has been hunted down and filled by United States Navy SEALS bringing the situation not to an end but to the turn of the page to a new chapter. While hundreds of Americans celebrated in front of the White House and millions more around the country waved their miniature American flags and pumped their fists to the chants of "USA, USA, USA" or sang the national anthem others were already feeling ulcers expecting a new attack from Al-Qaida.
What does it mean? Is it any different than the cold war ending, or the defeat of the Axis in World War II? There will always be an enemy. There will be allies who turn against us or we turn against us, there will be disenfranchised individuals who need to blame somebody else for their dissatisfaction. I can't say the U.S. doesn't make a good target of ire for we have a way of getting into everybody's business in an attempt to help our selves to their resources (Oil) but that's really only because we can. If Macedonia or Jamaica or Costa Rica had the might, they would probably be just as reviled by those without an easy future.
In a fantastic, perfect world were good and evil was black and white, the assassination of Osama Bin Laden would have been accomplished by Captain America and there would be no more guerrilla warfare or acts of terror if you will on innocent people but there are always new people who crave power or see things so differently it drives them to extreme acts.
This death doesn't solve everything nor does it doesn't rekindle anything but it sure does make a lot of people happy. Is happy the right word?

Smell The Nationalism
It is in the air, a scent that America needs to rebound. It is similar to the craziness that swirled in the early 80s when Reagan suddenly became the greatest American ever! Now he's revered as a G.O.P. deity because the last two Republican presidents were weaselly, corrupt and overtly obsessed with middle eastern oil. When Clinton dies he will get the Reagan treatment by the Dems becoming the new JFK.
If you watch TV you will see more pro American business advertising. This 4th of July is going to be nuts. I don't think it's coincidence that one of this year's big summer movies is Captain America. (how is this not being released on July Fourth?) We are going to be bombarded with USA, so get on board or get out!

You're Not The Boss Of Me
Steven Slater, American hero! . . . well sort of. Fulfilling the real American dream of the “take this job and shove it” experience. So Slater having enough from airline passengers behaving like they’re desire more important than the safety and a state of order decides to tell off the passenger over the plane’s P.A. system, grab a beer and use the emergency exit slide to get the hell out of Dodge and back home. Seems simple and it is but in a larger scheme of things where personal F.U.s can amount to a societal epiphany it’s more complex. In many ways it’s an employee who frustrated with the economy and the tension that it’s caused all over but it is to me, somebody who has spent numerous years working in different aspects of the service industry clear response to the modern guest, shopper or whatever.
The idea that the costumer is always right is still one cherished by companies all over even if it’s just a practice in bribing somebody to shut up. It’s been proven time and time again that a displeased person will tell other people of their negative experience more often than they will talk about a great one and because of that companies spend a lot of time trying make up for what may seem like a wrong doing. This has become so common that there are people now who intentionally find things to complain about, wasting an enormous amount of energy to get an upgrade at a hotel or a free meal, to them it is a game where the reward outweighs the risk of being a jackass. These are the same people that will try to walk out without paying if they aren’t given what they want and then write a nasty letter to the corporate office or owner about injustices done to them during their experience. Generally the guest will be compensated with a free night’s stay, ticket to anywhere in the country or a complimentary meal; this to me unacceptable behavior. I’ve even dealt with guests that ask for money . . . cash! The idea of everybody acting on good behavior and if there really is an important issue you discreetly bring it to the proper person’s attention has been thrown out the window as well as the squeaky wheel theory where if you’re a whiner you will get more attention. I’ve seen with my own eyes people going beyond that and just disregarding everything and everyone around them to get what they want, shoving people in line out of the way, using cell phones while the plane is trying to take off. There is a sense of entitlement that goes along with people’s impatience; it is a toxic combination. I understand that when we pay for something we have expectations but somehow expectations have become ignorant or reality. Unless I’m wrong and money really does buy everything no matter what and if that’s the case most misbehaving passengers, diners, shoppers and guests aren’t paying enough. When I worked at the front desk of a 4 star hotel a while back we had some dirt cheap rates available on line to increase our occupancy and to keep the employees busy and working. This rate became known as the riffraff rate to the front desk staff as the guests who took advantage of this rate were ridiculously high maintenance with expectations that revealed a lot about who these people’s life experience. So while these individuals complained about there not being free breakfast buffet our guests who were paying more than twice as much for the same product were all delighted that we had a complimentary wine and cheese hour available. While the former group were adamant that they had reserved bigger room the latter group regarded everything charming, cozy. Maybe the guests who paid less felt like they were being unfairly financially discriminated against, they felt that they were getting a good deal that would propel them to higher status when they were getting equal treatment as other paying clients. The abuse that these folks dealt out to the front desk staff was completely uncalled for and you would think embarrassing to the guest but like I said before there are people that don’t mind expending the energy and time; it doesn’t mean anything to them, it’s a game.
The result of such misbehaving however should be available to other hospitality providing companies. We have web sights devoted to rating companies, ranting, raving and trashing them, right? Why is there not a database full of bad guests that a Cruise line or airline can access to see who is unfit to be a part of their program? A friend of mine once demanded that people should have to take a test to fly and until you passed you would be labeled “unfit to fly”. I would like to see this, I would like to see bitches and asshole be pit into the public eye and known for their deeds.
It should be said that there are indeed testy service industry employees who can genuinely make an experience uncomfortable or horrible and these folks are more than likely burnt out on their career choice as it obviously one where the daily grind can really bring you down. The rewards are the occasional, “thank you”, cash tips and hard to obtain employee deals with your company.
I will be honest, a kind person who can strike up a good rapport with the immediate decision makers (desk workers) and aren’t afraid to let it be known their tight with Action Jackson will be welcomed and given special service by those who can. A good suggestion when going to a hotel for a lengthy stay is to tip very well on the first day or two of your stay and you will be treated like the V.I.P.
Just a note, when I say rapport I don’t mean calling people “bro” or behaving like you’re “on their level” for that’s not what a bellman or flight attendant wants. All they want is the respect that are willing to give you for being a respectable person.

American Cheese

Is this cheese that is known as "American" really a good example of what our country can produce or is it a symbol of just how disgusting our nation is?
What used to be made from a blend of Colby and Cheddar is now something that doesn't even fit the legal definition of cheese. It is a product that was forced into American homes during 3 months of 1942 wartime efforts as U.S. officials put a ban on all foreign cheeses.
The cheese is naturally a wonderful ingredient for Macaroni and cheese and a grilled cheese sandwich but after that the product is thin of tasty possibilities. It's something that if you're not raised on it you won't acquire the taste for like many regional dishes but like real region fair, American Cheese isn't worth much aside from cheap.

World Cup

It's that time again when every 4 years the soccer/football fans of Earth go insane as the World Cup champion is decided. We are led to believe that every nation on the planet explodes with hope and fever when this tournament is played all nations bt the greatest one of them all; the United States of America.
Reason has it that there's just something about the American psyche that can't get a grip of the beautiful game or Joga Bonito as the Brazilians call it, maybe it's too boring or the whole off sides rule confuses to many folks. Sure there are some Americans who like and even love the sport but they all seem to be a bit out there, a bit liberal and often talk about their health food diet too much. It has almost become American not to like the sport on the principle that the rest of the world adores the game, just another stance to push everybody else away as we insist everybody need us and do as we say (except China).
I see it as propaganda though; I mean we can get into American Gladiators we can get into anything, right? One idea I can agree with is that it's very hard for bookies to put out a point spread for games which are generally concluded with a 2-1 score (and that's an exciting game) so the gambling aspect that many Americans use to make sports more . . . "interesting" The other point would be the difficulty in placement of television commercials, there's only one scheduled break at half time and the rest is continuous with virtually no timed stops. that you can fit an advert into. With modern technology adds can be ran across the screen at any time which is very annoying but more and more common. So the connection would be the lack of big money to be made and that is what we are about as a country isn't it? Making a buck, because as we all know, "Greed for lack of a better word is good" So if we can make Soccer a more lucrative game for US we can have every rabid sports fan in America live for the World Cup, stay up to strange hours as live games are telecast from South Africa! MAybe I'm wrong about this, maybe if their was more violence like in Hockey or Football we would tune in; do we need more Zidane!
My personal feeling about the game is that there needs to be less flopping and the off sides rule should be dropped.

You're such a baby!

When English children whine they are the whiniest children in the history of whiny children. I don’t wish them any harm but I do think their whininess as children comes back to them as adults when their own children start whining. They sound is so effete, it all sounds like spoiled crying as if their Earl Grey wasn’t steeped for 5 minutes exact. This is not to say that these children’s concerns aren’t legitimate; it’s not like they just cry about only liking chips and not their fish. I suppose however being British is enough to make anyone whiny.
To be fair English whining compared to American whining is more tempered; they don’t have the outrageous tantrums which make our young seem so spectacular. There is nothing quite so horrific as seeing a child screaming so hard their fat, little face is red.
Maybe I should travel the world to find out the true whine of each culture's children or maybe I should just listen to White Lion's "When the children Cry"

Blue Jeans

Listen jeans are American and I don't care what kind of Euro fit you you sport you want to be American when you wear them! It doesn't matter if they are made in other countries or designed by non Americans all jeans want to be from the U.S.!
The cut doesn't matter, the color doesn't matter and price doesn't matter; it's all about freedom from slacks, khakis, corduroys, dresses, skirts, jump suits, knickers and even kilts!
You put on your jeans or so help me American god I will shoot you! Jeans bring us all together from the Miners who dug for gold back in 1849 who got their patriotism on from the originator Levi Strauss to the drug lovin' Hippies of the 1960's to Brooke Shields who made apparently wore just "designer" and nothing else in her teens in the 80s to rich guys who thought jeans and blazers gave them street cred to rap acts who wore their American pride around their thighs and baggy showing the world that American's truly are lazy. May America bless you all!

My favorite pair of jeans may be the style I wear now, low rise boot cut from Diesel, putting them on for the first time was like stepping into a second skin, like coming home; being totally comfortable and feeling excellent.
My worst jeans were a pair of red, baggy fit from The Gap. They weren't horrible but in retrospect it was damn goofy. Embrace the time right?

Let's talk, CHOMP!

We have McDonalds, Burger King, Carl's jr., Jack in the Box, Wendy's, Hardy's, In-n'-Out Burger, Sonic and White Castle are just a few of the larger, well known companies that all have a respectable product which millions of people crave and consume on a daily basis.

Burgers done every which way one wanted, served with jack cheese, zucchini, avocado, dripping with pesto, crowned by bacon, done Hawaiian style, French style, Popeye style, smothered, with mushrooms, coated with blue cheese, pasted with teryaki, piled high with japenos, served on a silver plate with caviar, foie gras and made from Kobe beef, whatever your American heart desires! Whatever those clogged vanes need! You can burgers bigger than your head, bigger than your first born, bigger than the cow!

Listen I'm not here to start any fuss; I just want the burger to be embraced like the deity it is. I don't mean I want a burger made from Zues or Odin or the one god and I'm not going to create a shrine devoted to Hamburgers but in the country religious symbolism is everything you want it to be; it is all part of our narrative and mythology.
You can find your way across this country using burger joint the way a navigatior uses stars....We have munched Bridge burgers in the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge and Cable burgers hard by the Golden Gate, Dixie burgers in the sunny South and Yankee Doodle burgers in the North....We had a Capitol Burger -- guess where. And so help us, in the inner courtyard of the Pentagon, a Penta burger.
Charles Kuralt, journalist
A Hamburger is warm and fragrant and juicy. A hamburger is soft and nonthreatening. It personifies the Great Mother herself who has nourished us from the beginning. A hamburger is an icon of layered circles, the circle being at once the most spiritual and the most sensual of shapes. A hamburger is companionable and faintly erotic. The nipple of the Goddess, the bountiful belly-ball of Eve. You are what you think you eat.
Tom Robbins
Sacred cows make the best hamburger.
Mark Twain
Special thanks to Mary's Danish for the album cover made back in the early 90s when irony still meant something.
