Weekly Mix #87

There's not too much cleverness here though the songs are good to listen to, especially the classic rock. Ozzy, Lynyrd, Allman Brothers. the new stuff is cool as well even though much of it is some artists I listened to relentlessly this year. I don't know the Section that starts with The Black Angels and travels through EMA is pretty dark . . . good times

1. Gold Mine by Breanne Düren
I was obsessed with this song for a week and now I'm glad I was because I ignored it when it was a free downlaod. Soulful and easy.

2. Eyes by Peter Bjorn and John

The Non stop Swede machine!

3. Choose to Choose by The Black Angels

Good little E.P. these guys put out in late 2011

4. Lay myself Down by Mazzy Star

Yes, they are back after something close to fifteen years and you know what? They sound exactly the same, dreamy and sweet with macabre lyrics.

5. I'll Be Your Mirror by Velvet Underground with Nico

I always thought that Hope Sandoval from Mazzy Star should sing all of Nico's VU tunes.

6. Seven Devils by Florence + the Machine

Big, epic, sweeping, creepy song.

7. Waltz 2 from Jazz Sweet by Armonie Syphony Orchestra & Evgeny Bilyar

Composed by Dmitrij Dmitrievich Shostakovich this is a good old famous bit of classical music.

8. Marked by EMA
 This is a weird, sexy song that I keep thinking is about some sort of mannequin
9. Midnight Rider by The Allman Brothers band

Not Lynyrd Skynyrd, not the Marshall Tucker Band.

10.Movin' On Up by Primal Scream

This is one of those songs that I never had any strong feelings about but I often read how many critics loved this song for it's Manchester, beats and rave culture (ecstasy) connection

11.Let's All Go to the Bar by Deer Tick

They are back and not as depressing.

12.Balloon Man by Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians

Is this a feel good song? I don't know, I mean Balloon Men explode all over New York City but the bouncy beat is so good!

13.(Don't Go back To) Rockville by R.E.M.
Maryland? Rockville Maryland? Is there a college there or something? Maybe this was an add for some College based in Athens GA.
14.Maybe She's Right by She Wants Revenge

 The darkness of the San Fernando valley persists in the hearts of She Wants Revenge. Do people eve call them SWR?

15.Baby Says by The Kills

Every time I hear a new Kills song I get excited and I like it but then I realized it all sounds the same

16.Chicago by Tom Waits

He is still making good music and he still sounds like a mad man.

17.Crazy Train by Ozzy Osbourne

If you don't know this song you're A) not an Ozzy fan B) never been to a professional sporting event C) Never watched TV

If you don't know this mammoth classic rock jam you are not American, in fact you probably want to destroy America. If you don't love this song that's okay, it's kind of long.

Weekly Mix #83

Sometimes I feel that the more I make these mixes the less known the songs are but then I'll look back at the list and feel like I've heard each song a million times. This mix has a section that gets into some sould real and otherwise but that's really the only neat transition . . . well the last two songs work really well together but if you have any heartbeat you'll be a slobbering mess after listening to them.

1. Rope by Foo Fighters
Keeping the hopes and dreams of Rock alive after a longer stretch of success than I would have ever though.
2. Heartbreaker by Led Zeppelin
I never think of this as one my favorite Zep songs but it always satisfies, always gets me feeling good.
3. Impressed by Charlie Sexton
This was a minor hit back in 1985. He had big hair and the video was very 80s

4. Punching In a Dream by Naked and Famous
the best music I've heard from New Zealand since . . . Crowded House?
5. California by EMA
"Fuck California, you made me boring" EMA laying it down like a punk but sounding like a performance artist. There aren't too many anti California songs out there but this number fills that void for 2011.

6. Come Undone by Duran Duran
One of my favorite DD songs.
7. Two Against One  by Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi
Jack White sings the vocals on this song, I think it's from the TV series Rome
8. My Body by Young the Giant
It's a sing along and sing alongs are very dangerous ans subversive as is dance music! Think about what dance music gets people to do.
9. Angela Surf City by The Walkmen
I always want The Walkmen to be better than they are but they haven't done better than The Rat. This song is pretty enjoyable in it's surf type feel.

10.Surfin' U.S.A. by The Beach Boys
Groovy song from 1963, a song that creates something that doesn't really exist anywhere but in our imagination.
11.Taken for a Fool by The Strokes
I though this new album would be great but it was sort of flat. This is one of the high lights however.
12.Come Closer by Miles Kane
This song sounds like Beady Eye but it's not. So it's catchy Brit pop sounding stuff.
13.Gloria by Mando Diao
Damn this song is good! Scandinavia out performs America again. It may ll be show tunes but the passion behind this song is powerful sounding. It's got a great slick video too!
14.Sinister Kid by The Black Keys
They got opne speed and that's soulful funk without soul of funkiness, impressive.
15.Respect by Otis Redding
The original before Aretha Franklyn got her hands on it and made it huge. Otis' version is more brassy and funky and just as enjoyable.

16.Old Tyme Religion by Hugo
Is this song a joke? It sounds like it might be with it's modern take on low-fi soul
17.Even Flow by Pearl Jam
Happy 20 years guys. Eddy belts it like nobody's business even if back then everybody wanted his business.

18.New Direction by Black Lips
There was a buzz about this band that never triumphed above that murmer
19.The No No Song by The Sounds
So catchy and so cool. I always wonder why these guys never had a monster hit.
20. Goodbye, Dear Friend by Deer tick
Really this song should only be listened to if you want to be depressed, if the mood is dark and you can take it. It makes me want to cry in no good way.
21.Bridge Over troubled Water by Simon & Garfunkel
On the other side of tears this will give you hope if you were feeling lost after that list track.

Weekly mix #66

This is a 2009 mix with several songs that I never listen to but wanted to represent represent on a modern mix. Sometimes I think that I have to put more emphases on modern, current tunes than better ones in  fear that I may become an old fart. Maybe I just need to dig more deeply into the unknown . . .

1. C'mon Let's Go by Girlschool
I guess women are allowed to be tuff too.
2. Dirty little Rockstar by The Cult

Still making jams after all this time, adjusting to the times well enough.

3. That's My Tune by Morningwood

Some songs drone and drone well, this is one of them

4. My Own Worst Enemy by Lit
This song just gets funnier as the years pass
 5. Porno Star by Buckcherry
Josh and the boys are not subtle by any means. They are a band who needs a scene.
6. My Way by Miss Crazy
A band that wanted the 80s back in all their glam metalness. Sorry guys, you missed the boat.
7. Primary Colours by The Horrors
It's a sweeping  song from band that used to be anything but. It reminds me of 80s music I never heard.
8. Petition The Lord With Prayor by The Doors
You Cannot petition the lord with prayer!
9. United States of Eurasia/Collateral Damage by Muse
Showing their love for Queen and Radiohead full on!
10.Beach Town by Le Loup
It's kind of etherial and kind of hypnotic but mostly it's not much of anything you'd have an urge to hear
11.Fine For Now by Grizzly Bear
Only slightly more friendly than the last song, this tune has some nice harmonies but mainly makes you turn into a drip.
12.Every Rose Has It's Thorn by Poison
There's something about a huge hit ballad that can make unknown indie rock seem totally lame
13.Art isn't Real (City Of Sin) by Deer Tick
Sometimes one discovers a little indie song that is remarkably good and you wonder why nobody else knows about it. I found this song on a Penguin music sampler.
14.Everymorning by Sugar Ray
I liked them better when they just wanted to fly.
15.T.N.T by AC/DC

Yup, snap out of it we're blowing shit up with the greatest thing ever to come out of Australia.

16.Cryin' by Aerosmith
I'm getting soft because after years of denying any like for this song I finally caved.
17.Standing Next To Me by The Last Shadow Puppets
More sixties inspired rock. I feel like I should be riding in a black cab through London , heartbroken, wondering where it all went wrong.
18.Coffin Faftory by The Mumblers
Some boys from Silicon Valley got out there organ and made some music, there should have been a movement around this but that's just me being' wishful.
19.Time Has Come Today by The Chambers Brothers
Are these guys one hit wonders? I think so. It's a good 60s song about change and all that 60s garbage.
20.Use Somebody by Kings of Lyon
This should be the end of the mix but I decided I didn't want to be a total wuss
21. You Could Be Mine by Damone
Worship the power of GN'R even if it through a cover song by a very underrated band.
